How well do Vatican coins sell on eBay?

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,445 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyone have any experience selling Vatican coins on eBay. I'm thinking of putting up a 1931 50 centesimi coin in Unc.

I've watched the certified stuff for the past year or so and they do so-so.

In order to get over catalog they need to be fairly rare or exceptionally high grade. These coins never circulated hevily so they UNC is not unusual for them My guess is a raw common coin like a 1931 50c will roll over and die, sellin for two or three bucks. It may be very nice indeed, but no one will believe that on e-bay.

Just my opinion, if you're interested you may want to keep an eye on a very common 1942 Vatican lira that 'll be starting tonight in an NGC MS67 holder.

It's a very nice coin. Should I NGC it?

Possibly, I think the money grade on these is 66. The question I ask myself "will I net more cash after all expenses with or without certification?" I'll have a better idea on how to answer that question next week.

A quick check of closed e-bay sales for raw coins similar to yours yields these:
    1937 50c looks XF+ sold for $4.50 (BIN) catalog $4-XF $6-UNC
    1934 10c UNC+ sold for $8.00 catalog $6-UNC
    1932 2L looks AU sold for $6.29 catalog $6-UNC

They actually did better than I expected, especially with a good picture. There was not a lot of bidding activity so you may want to open bidding at the minimum acceptable price.

    For comparison one certified coin:
    1942 2L NGC MS64 sold for $27.98, catalog $3.50 in UNC

That's a strong multiple of catalog for a coin with a 64 grade which easily meets my criterion of moving the sale price up enough to pay for the slabbing.

I have some additional very nice Vatican coins laying around. I just sent in the best one as an educational coin to see how he would certify and sell. If this one goes well the rest will follow.

Will you be selling any of those beautiful French copper coins again? Could you provide me a link to your auctions.

Lots of copper this week but the only French coin is a brass 1926 chamber of commerce 50c. Here's a link to my auctions, but the usual place to find forum member offerings in in the weekly swap thread..

  • Good question, but couldn't it change on a day to day basis what sells good?
