If you like, please guess the grade of this 1885-CC Morgan Dollar. It's been in my collection for about a year, but I only recently photographed it to share with you.

Maybe it's just the picture but it looks wiped on the reverse.
    Prost!

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Thanks for the posts that you have already made. I'll reveal the grades about mid-day Sunday to give the morning shift a chance to grade them before I divulge the grade.

If you are anxious PM me and I'll reply with the grade.

Goober: I think that you are referring to the apparent die striations that are evident on the reverse of the coin. The coin does not appear to be wiped in person.

Knowing Stuarts penchant for low grade coins.....

MS-66...hard to guess the PL/DMPL based on the pic.

(BTW...I sold a 1885cc MS-63 last year because I figured it was time to get out while the market was up. I offer free investment advice...worth every penny.) image

Then you get my vote of a MS64PL

I prefer this coin to the 81 CC. 85 CCs are notorious for having lots of bag marks in MS 65. This coin's cheek looks very clean for the date & mint mark. The reverse appears PL, but not so with the obverse. There's a color discrepancy between the lt. & rt. sides of the obverse. Perhaps this is due to the imaging.

I'd guess this coin is MS 65, though it might be a 4 due to softness of strike re the hair over the ear & the breast feathers on the reverse are not bold..

Sliderider: As I mentioned to Goober earlier in the thread, I think that you are referring to the apparent die striations that are evident on the reverse of the coin. The coin does not appear to be wiped in person.

  • Looks MS 66 PL ( striations on rev. hurt DMPL classification)

  • This date/MM is known for obv. marks on liberty and given grades appropriately. The die polish can Knock it down on rev from DMPL to PL if the mirrors on both sides are 8". IF the spots in obv. field are toning, it's an MS 66 PL or DMPL, otherwise PQ MS65 PL/DMPL.

The grades for both the 1881-CC and 1885-CC Morgan dollars are:
1881-CC PCI MS-64 PQ (Old Green Border Label) 1885-CC PCI MS-62 DMPL (Old Green Border Label)
I plan to crack out both coins (and some others) from the PCI holders, and submit them to PCGS for grading.

Some of these old Green Border Label Slabbed coins appear to be very conservatively (or under) graded...
