Is this the time to buy or sell?

I noticed in a number of threads lately that a lot of long term collectors consider the market to be priced high. Relative to the last decade this is correct. Prices are much higher than the last few years. Historically speaking I'm not so sure. If we consider the average wageearners weekly check and what it can buy today(in coins) and compare with other times in the market of the 60s 70s and 80s, I think we have a lot of room to catch up with those prices. Add to that the large number of new collectors added in the last few years and maybe, just maybe, prices of the less than common stuff could double or triple in the next few years.

Another indication follows the theory of contrary investing. When everyone is saying SELL, SELL that usually means that they have already sold, hence the supply of extra coins for sale has diminished. In contrast when the consensus is that its a great time to buy, often that means that they have bought as much as they can and are awaiting an opportunity to unload.

Of course you can buy dogs and lose in a rising market or find deals in a falling market but in general terms, is the market over the next 5 years headed up or down?

Thoughts?

    Depends on the series.

I'm real aggressive in buying into several and plan on continuing for the forseeable future.

  • I'm really not in the hobby to sell coins but to collect. I enjoy the hobby and when I die the collection will go to my son. This is not to say that I don't sell coins but the coins I do sell are ones I have had for a while and are not in my field of interest anymore.

I continue to build my collection as well as sell off coins that have been upgraded.

so the answer to your question, Is this the time to buy or sell? is "yes"

Seems like it's a good time to do both! The stuff you sell fetches good prices, and the healthy prices mean there's lots of nice stuff for sale that I suspect wouldn't be if the market weren't so supportive. It's a fun time to be a coin collector.

Serously, if you want to make a few bucks I think its a good time to sell. On the other hand, there are some terrific coins being offered by long term holders looking to cash in. While you will pay top dollar, its a good time to buy great coins for your own long term holdings.

I think it's time to sell. Unless you're a collector. Then it's always time to buy. Of course, you'll always do well to buy smart and sell smarter.
