Toning

Would someone explain this to me?"Last year I sold 3 50d jeffs that were just starting to tone after 50 years, how can coins be completely toned after a year or two or sometimes with in 2 or 3 months"? I've owned the 50d's since 1960.I also have some 1997 ASE's starting to tone around the edges and they have been in flips since 1997.I believe most toning is the results of AT

For NT, toning is dependant on storage conditions. Its always hot and humid where I live with frequent prolonged periods of no electricity. Your coins would probably tone differently through the years if in my collection instead of yours. image

Rubbish! Based on what I have seen less than 2% of all toned coins are the result of AT. If we are talking "monster toned" coin on eBay that would be a far different matter.

Not only do you have to factor in environment and storage methods, but different coins tone at different rates. Your 50d nickels are probably not going to tone as quickly as a modern ASE...... Most toning isn't AT, IMO.....

  • Aethelred:I should have made myself a little clearer. Most of the toned coins I've seen have been on E-Bay and the rest I seen on this educational forum. So I will retract the statement (most coins are AT)
