TONEDDOLLARS

Well I attended the coin expo this weekend (Thurs-Sun). It was not a bad show if you were looking for type coins. There was not much in the way of my type coins (toned morgans). There was a good mix of dealers (100-120?) of all types. Paper, gold, type, exumina(sp), coppers, A dealer with two nice cases full of seated dollars. Just a nice mix, something for everyone.
I was supposed to go to the ANA grading seminar, but work screwed me up. BigD5 (Darrin) went to the course and said it was cool. I'm sure he will comment on it later when he has time. I will say this about Darrin, He had the busiest table at the show. Two or more people at his table at all times.
I met Fountainheadgold at the show on Thursday night. He also took the grading course. I asked him if he was going to be around for the weekend, and he told me he was leaving on Sat. We made a date to meet up on Friday morning and I would show him a few boxes of my toned Morgans. I know he likes to look at toners so I brought a few along to show him (or is it show off?).
I met a few other members, tonelover,Mr.D and some who's board names escape me at this time (oldtimers problems) I'm sorry. I really did not find much of anything to add to my collection. I did pick up a few toned unc. Lincolns for my "fooling around with Lincolns set, while I wait for great toned Morgans". Some pretty sexy ones that can be had for very short money.
I also had first shot at a really cool medal with awsome colors in its original leather holder with felt lining inside. The medal had great colors. I went today, to see if the dealer wanted to sell it as he was not sure on on Thursday night. He told me if I was interested he would let me buy it. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the show and someone came up to me and told me had just bought this cool medal. Well, live and learn I guess

Great report! I hope to make it there tomorrow.
Cheers,
Bob
I'm working on my barber halves set in fine and i was able to find 8 coins i needed (30 coins to go) most of them expensive. i stopped by Darin's table and between him and the dealer next to him I was able to raise about $500 (Darin picked some nice toned Jeffs). that helped with buying the halves. Before I left I took pity on Darin and i bought my final half from him 1895 in fine. it was a good day
coolest coin: 1896 half in ag (slabbed)
coolest non-coin related item: a dinosaur egg
One dealer was whining that people weren't buying his coins evenj though many of them were priced below bid. I overheard it and looked at his coins: very expensive gold... need i say more?
I was able to get some proof set as well (some wildly toned). Tomorrow i'm going back, this time as a dealer, I have 160 slabs all priced and ready to roll, wish me luck!

Almost jumped at a super "prooflike" 1892 NGC MS-65 Barber Quarter but decided it was probably some sort of altered surface piece so I though better of it. Probably had just come back from NCS. The newest addition to my collection is this neat end-roll toned 1964 NGC MS-67 Washington Quarter which I felt the dealer had underpriced at $90.
All in all it didn't seem overly busy but any chance to see a lot at coins in person must always be taken advantage of.
I also picked up a really cool medal with awsome colors in its original leather holder with felt lining inside.
Today wasn't quite as busy as yesterday. Still very busy, and I managed to do just a touch better today than yesterday when the final bell rang, mostly by running around the floor towards the end of the night.
Sold that ms/62 bust half I mentioned in my previous thread, and KNEW I wasn't going to go home with that one.
Met a few more board members, Graddad and his grandson (who was an exceptional "waiter" while graddad and I did some business), Sean Q (?, I hope I got that correct, and I apologize if I didn't). Sean "helped" me with an "error" I had. .......or actually never had. If I forgot anyone else, I apologize. I already mentioned the other members I met in my previous thread.
At least I was able to eat some lunch today, even if it was brief.
Tonelover STOLE a coin I was going to purchase. He's a snaky rascal on the floor, so you have to watch him at every second.
Actually, it was kind of funny how he ended up with a fantastic toned Quarter. I was at my table, and he approached to say hello. He mentioned that he found 1 coin that he liked, on the other side of the bourse. I mentioned that I found a coin on the other side as well. I got busy, and he meandered over and purchased his coin when that dealer made his way back to his table.
Well, I almost fell over when he showed me the coin. It was the coin I was going to purchase! Kind of funny, but I'm glad he ended up with the coin. We both had a laugh at that one. ALTHOUGH he did miss the very nice, colorful, album toned Peace dollar in the same dealer's case. Frattlaw, where are you?
Security caught someone stealing coins. That was eventful. The police came, arrested the culprit, and full charges are going to be filed against this guy. He was caught stealing in Boston this past spring as well. They found 2 liscenses and multiple identity credit cards with this guy as well.
I plan on making it a short day tomorrow (lunchish?) unless things are gangbusters, but I don't anticipate anything like that.

Tonelover's quarter is MUCH nicer in hand. Fantastic luster and color, that his stinky pic. doesn't fully show off.

TD, I really enjoyed seeing your toners, It truly was eye candy. I would love to see them again. I never get tired of looking at great Monster toners such as yours. It was nice to meet you and Dick(greattoning). The ANA grading course was great and I would highly reccomend it to everyone. I met Darrin at the Grading seminar. We ended up sitting next to each other and half way through the first day I realized who he was, which was quite a surprise.

<< <i>Helluva price though! >>
And you didn't even negotiate!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also found a semi-monster Morgan from that dealer. You guys need to look a bit harder, although I don't mind you leaving goodies for me out on the floor. and again I'll mention the album toned Peace dollar.

I spent three hours looking for that special 19-D merc in attractive, interesting XF but didn't find it. A couple credible XF's at fair prices, but none that sung. Some conversations with helpful, friendly, and obliging folks along the way -- if any of them were you folks here, thanks!
My acquisitions today were:
5 SAE's in the kiddies' birth years
1 roll 2004-P Keelboat nickels
1 roll 2004-P Iowa quarters
1 1965 SMS (nothing special, but didn't have it before)
1912 Liberty Nickel, VF35 (nice coin -- neat streaky brown surfaces)
1945-S Jefferson, MS64
1907 Barber 10c, net F (the only mistake of the bunch -- some rim prob's I didn't pick up on until too late -- oh well, cheap screwup)
1917 merc, colorful AU58
2 1939 mercs, both colorful album toned 58's
1939D merc, MS65 w/ fantastic color
1942-S merc, XF45 w/ cool crusty lilac tone
1944-S merc, AU58, vivid album toning
1945-D merc, AU58, as above
1945 micro S merc, Au55, as above
1915-D Barber 25c, the most appealing VG8 I've ever seen
1962 Franklin 50c, MS63 PQ w/ nice subtle lilac obverse
and the best pickup of the day,
1872 half dime, VF35 w/ cool old crusty, colorful album toning. Reverse is solid XF40 or better, but the scroll edge on the obv isn't quite sharp enough to make the cut. Very cool coin. Didn't go there thinking about one, but had to have it.
I'd been looking for an appealing XF Barber quarter for a while. Everything I saw -- not saying I saw everything there, but the ones I looked at -- was either too boring or considerably more than I wanted to spend. Then I happened upon the 15-D in VG, and it spoke in a way most VG's don't -- nicely colored, well detailed, very solid looking coin for eight bucks... so I bought it. Next place I stopped had one (I forget the date -- something common) marked XF, more of a 35 in my view, with lovely honey-brown color, iridescent accents around the edges, and great appeal overall. Fifty bucks. I passed. I kicked myself several times on the drive home. That was basically what I'd been looking for. Oh well. I do like the one I brought home.
In fact, with the exception of the dinged Barber dime I should have looked at a little closer, I'm delighted with everything I bought, and none of it cost much at all.
