To me it looks like something on the holder casting a shadow on the coin.

  • Golddllr, is my metal detecting buddy. I've held this coin in my hand. I assure you that this is a raised section on the actual coin. Not on his home-made holder. I persuaded him to post it cuz it looks like a mint error to my un-trained eye.

P.S. you should also see the awesome 1851 gold dollar he found.

It could be a silver plated counterfeit, it could be fire damaged, it could have had something added to it post production or it could have been struck from a damaged die (although I doubt it).

  • Did they do those things along time ago? He found this while detecting. If you could see it in person you would know it's not plated. He found it in an area where it most likely spent 100+ years in the ground. It's a little town (that he lives in) built on a mountain in central PA. The town I live in is small but it's twice as big as his. Not alot of sophisticated coin tampering going on around here. I live in South Williamsport, PA. he lives south of me. Check our area out, It's awesome.

  • I didn't mean to sound so defensive. The 120 year old house he found it at still stands, but I guess it still could'ven been in a fire. I think it's a real mint error cuz of the light strike on the word America. It looks like the "bump" robbed the word of pressure during the strike. I wish I could talk him into sending it in.

  • not fire damage and not silver plated this is the way it came out of the ground.
Thanks for your input. (I think I will turn it into a baby ring for my son he will like that when he grows up)
  • Goldllr, coinsite says this coin is worth $5.00-$15.00 in average circulated condition. Before you beat this thing into a ring sell it to me. I'll give you $20.00 for it. If you want to sell it bring it to work tomorrow. As you know I'm getting together coins to send to the PCGS for my first time. This might as well be one of them.

  • It's what you think it is probably if the wear over the raised cud is consistent with the rest of the wear seen under a loop. Interesting find!

I'll give you $20.01. Just kidding....but don't destroy it. It looks like it could be legit. I have no idea what it is, but it's worth sending in to have evaluated just from the history you give.image
