1921 Morgan Error?

Looking through my grandfathers coins.

Found this 1921 and is in awesome shape.

What type of error is this? Does this lessen the value of the coin?

It's a die crack. One of the members here loves 1921 Morgan die cracks...he could give you an idea of value.

Small die cracks like the one pictured have no impact on the value of a coin or it's grade.

True, no extra value, but you asked a very important question . As the die continued to strike coins those cracks grow into die breaks where large chunks of extra metal start appearing on the surface of the coin. These "late die state" coins are valuable, and can be re-sold quickly at a tidy profit in many cases.

<------ See my icon for an example of a die break.

Keep your eyes open. It's amazing what you can find. There are tremendous opportunities out there for collectors to cherry-pick wonderful 1921, 1921-D, and 1921-S die breaks and varieties on Morgan dollars.

BTW, looks like the star is doubled as well and possibly tripled.

We're only seeing a small portion of the coin, here. That crack might extend around the entire circumference of the coin for all we know. Die cracks are sometimes accompanied by other problems, like was noted when the doubled/tripled star was mentioned. How do we know the rest of the coin isn't also doubled/tripled? Could there be die chips or cuds as well? A pic of the entire coin is in order so we can see the context from which the closeup was taken.

Too hard to tell from the angle of the light. I don't believe they are tripled but cannot pass judgement based solely on that picture.

  • You have opened my eyes.
I checked the rest of the coin out it has die breaks across three more stars to the E, plus on the reverse there is a die crack on one of the stars.
