Well I finally got an Ebay problem

86 transactions without a real problem. Quite a few overgraded coins and undisclosed problems , mostly the last 2 months which I needed to send back. In fact I stopped buying because I'm tired of sending them back. This is the first time I met a seller that refused to answer my emails and has not refunded my money.

1896 DMPL

This coin, described as PQ had hairlines visible to the eye in more than one direction, I was surprised it got slabbed. I sent it back 18 days ago and he refuses to answer my email or refund the money. I think he expects to ignore me and keep the money and the coin. I was kinda suprised, he seemed to have good feedback.

I invoiced him yesterday for the refund amount and told him in an email that I would be filing with the USPS, Ebay and Paypal, 5th email , still no response. He did respond to one email a week ago and said:
SORRY, I'VE GOTTEN A LOT OF eBAY SPAM IN MY JUNK MAIL FOLDER---REGARDING
SOME ITEM AND USERS THAT I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ---ASKING FOR SHIPPING
AMMOUNTS TO SUCH AND SUCH A PLACE ETC.
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR COIN?
JON

(If I was selling would I consider a buyers request for shipping amount to be JUNK mail)

but haven't heard from him since. BTW at the time he sent this he had nothing listed on ebay.

Oh well, the majority of people I have dealt with have been very honest and ethical, knew Id find one clown sooner or later.

  • Sometimes my spam filter thinks "question from bidder" mail sent from eBay is junk. I guess that mail has lots of HTML in it.

Lots of DMPL coins have very visible die polish lines, often confused with hairlines. Trace the line through letters for example 'B' of PLURIBUS. If you can see it before, into, and after the letter it's die polish not hairlining.

Bad news is..I don't see where the seller offered you a return policy in the auction. A lot of people won't accept returns, especially on certified stuff.

Those "hairlines" are likely raised and die polish, not cleaning...

Try to call him if you have not already done so.

Take Mark's advice. I lost track of how many possible problems I have avoided by picking up the phone and calling the other party. Some people just are not good at written communication. If you don't know how to pull contact info on eBay let me know and I'll post a link.

If you intend to file a PayPal claim you have two days left in which to do it.

But, I have to ask. What did you expect from a coin graded MS64? Absent other visible defects, on PL's and DMPL's, (as well as proofs), the number one reason they grade less than gem is hairlining.

Hmmmm. I understand your plight. Been there, done that!

Many bashed me when I vented on these boards under similar circumstances. I'll simply wish you well in your quest to obtain a satisfactory resolution.

We live and learn from our experiences. I, for one, will no longer buy anything on Ebay unless the seller has a good feedback record and offers an unconditional right to return the item for a refund.

My only advice is not to bother seeking redress through Ebay--you will get the standard "we're just a venue" BS response. Square Trade mediatiation is meaningless since it takes two to tango (if the seller refuses to participate, you're SOL).

Good luck in your efforts to resolve the situation!

Why did you assume a return policy?

  • Sometimes just requesting someones contact info, is enough to get them off their duff. I requested the info of a seller who was dragging his feet shipping an item recently, and the day before I planned to call him, the item finally arrived. I think he just didn't want to have to talk to me on the phone after the tone of my frequent emails.

That's a good point. Re-reading the item description, I see nothing about a return policy. Now in reality, even when I didn't specify a return policy, I would have accepted a prompt return (though I've never had to)...but if the coin is as advertised, the seller has done their part and isn't *obligated* to give a return. Having said that, from a buyer/customer satisfaction standpoint, taking a prompt good-faith return is the right thing to do, regardless of legal obligations.
  • WOW

    A phone Number

Didn't know I could get that. I called and left a message.

Thanks guys , you came throuigh again

BTW , I do know the diff between die polish marks and hairlines from a cloth. These were the latter. In any event this would not qualify as the super PQ ms65 he descibed. As far as assuming a return. Yes, I did and he could refuse it, but then I'd make my comments known on his feedback. In any event he can't keep the coin AND the money.

I have no idea what coynclecter is refering to as "hairlines" but if anybody thinks the mirrors on a 64 dm will be immaculate they're wrong. 64 dm are beat to L & back and the reflectivity magnifies it. Not the same type & size as you will find on a 64 Proof Barber, for example.
Also those green holder are from when PCGS was loose with the DMPL designation and most would only make PL nowdays but that's just IMO.
I wouldn't just mail a $300 coin back to a seller without making arraignments first.

Funny how we think eEay sellers don't know how to unlock the caplock key but he unlocked it to make the lower case "e" in <<<OF eBAY SPAM>>>
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
