On 9-28-2004 I posted a thread about pulling the trigger on buying 16 unopened proof sets. This is an update to that thread. The sets were offered at $15.00 each and for any I did not want after opening them, I could sell them back for $10.00 ($5.00 spread or maximum of $80.00 at risk on the 16 sets).
On 9-28-2004 I bought 2 sets out of the 16. I opened them and found both sets very nice. No dings, ugly toning or other negatives. All coins were bright and new, as when minted. One set had a cameo nickel that looked nice but was not a DCAM. The other set had a Frankie with DCAM obverse and light/moderate CAM on the obverse. Neither half was DDR. I could not resist cutting out this half and looking at it in hand and comparing it with the CAM 1961 I have in my proof Frankie set. It is not as nice as the 1961 in my set, but it still is a very attractive coin.
Today I was at the shop again and pulled the trigger on the remaining 14 sets. Opening them was very fun. Like hunting treasure.
The results - All sets are very nice. No DDR half (bummer). 3 sets with nice brilliant coins but nothing out of the ordinary. 7 sets have cameo nickels (nice but not DCAM). 4 sets with Frankies having the same DCAM obverse and light/moderate CAM observes.
I expect that out of the 16 total sets, the 8 cameo nickels were minted consecutively during a production run from relatively new dies; and the 5 Frankies with DCAM reverses and light/moderate CAM obverses are also coins minted consecutively. They have great eye appeal. The only negative of these 5 sets is that one of the Lincolns has a big carbon spot in the field in front of Lincoln and a smaller spot on his head (big deal).
I chose to keep the 5 sets with the Frankies. I sold the 3 run of the mill sets and the 8 sets with the cameo nickels back to the shop.
That's my update. I spent $55.00 for the fun of a treasure hunt and have 5 nices Frankies (and 5 sets of minor proofs).
If anyone is interested in the 8 sets with cameo nickels, please let me know and I can pick them up for you if you want. Further, if anyone is interested in one, some or all of the 5 sets with the Frankies that I kept (again one of the Frankies has been cut out of the cello), I am open to a selling same. Let me know if you are. Sanction II
