Popular Coin Idol anyone?

I dunno what this site's stance is on a coin idol competition, but over at coinpeople (now diactivated till the new year), we used to have competitions (run by me) where you'd submit a coin into a categorg (gold, silver, copper etc.) And we'd then go through them week by week until we came to one overall winner...

Like this;

PCI

Could we do that on this site, and how many would be interested if we could?

    After looking at a few of the linked threads, I think that's one helluva good idea image

    Something "similar" was done over on the Liteside with "your favorites" from the different denominations (vote for least-liked design of all the cent designs, halves, etc. - like voting one "off the island" every couple of days), but not with coins owned and displayed by forum members. I think it would go over well here on the Darkside.

    But what the heck do I know ... I'm a Darkside "newbie" ... image

  • well i've held it rwice now on Coinpeople so i have an idea of what i'm doing roughly. I've iron out alot of issues on fairness... like euros vs Ducats. So i'd happily do something like that here.

    It may take me a while to get into the swing of things though... cos posting stuff like that here maybe a little more iffy. You don't have coin picture albums here do you? And i used to host mine a coinpeople, i have a link for a temporary hoster but that won't host the pictures long enough.

    Now there's a problem.
  • I like the idea. It will be a challenge for members with good photographic skills, and a nice contest to watch for the rest of us. image

    BTW, nice halfpenny, I would have voted for it.

  • Well guys and gals Coinpeople is back up and running so i'll be doing the Popular Coin Idol (now in season 3!) over there. All members on here that would like to submit a coin you can let me know here. You can watch the progress of your coin over at coinpeople (i'll include the link as and when it's running).

    You do not have to be a member at the above site if you do not wish, as long as you leave me a picture on here, or direct me to an album with one and the picture will remain showing after a few months then i'll gladly enter anything you have.

    Due to the greater interest being shown this time around, i'll have to make the competition bigger than previously. So rather than 8 coins per category i'll allow 16.

    Entries begin tomorrow, so you've got a day to get your images and what not. The competition begins on Saturday 16th October.

    The categories are as follows;

    US Coins;

    (4 groups)

    Copper = 16 places (including brass and other copper/brass base metals)
    Silver = 16 places (Including silver/nickel/cupronickel/clad)
    Gold = 16 places
    Commems/other/tokens = 16 places (tokens/errors/bi-metal commems)

    World Coins;

    (8 groups)

    Ancient/hammered = 16 places
    Gold = 16 places
    Silver = 16 places (plus other 'silver' coloured metals)
    Copper = 16 places (+ brass/bronze etc.)
    Modern/bimet = 16 places (anything modern and non-commem or non-euro)
    Euro/bimet = 16 places (anything euro, non-commem)
    Commems = 16 places (anything commemorative)
    Other/tokens = 16 places (conders, coins made in unusual metals, touchpieces, errors etc.)

    First come first served basis... no more than 2 coins per category (until further notice when i'll be begging for someone to supply the much needed gap filling entries). Or maybe not.

    But in the case of giving everyone as equal an opportunity as possible two entries max until all interested parties have submitted.

    Anyone interested? If so i'll allow you to list your possible entries here now (because it gives you a fair chance, when i open it up on coinpeople tomorrow the entries will be snapped up rather quick). You can supply the photos at a later date, unless you have them on hand already!
  • Entries begin...

    Get your entries in!

    PCI3

    If you check out this thread (which is locked)

    Listings

    You will see where the vacancies are. (A few at the moment)

    If you have a coin you could fill one of those gaps with you post in one of these two;

    US Coin Entries

    World Coin Entries

    (or if you're not a member there you can tell me on here and post a pic here).

    If your are a member there you then post a picture in either the US picture thread, or the World picture thread with the description.

    Then wait till 16th Oct when we kick of the competition!

    There's a prize also for the winners (undisclosed), i run it but the moderator there who runs the omnicoin picture hosting site supplies the prizes.

    It's all good fun!
  • Interesting concept. I have a digital camera but seem to have no time to play with coin pics and have never signed up with webspace to host sizable pics.

    Well we should have "PCI4" going by Jan or Feb (time permitting), so anyone who misses out on this one there should be another one. It's proved very popular so far.

    So if you can't make this one there's always the next one. image
