HELP!!! Slipping...into.....the.....dark...**poof**

I'm finding myself falling off into the abyss known here as the "dark side." I went to the coin store a few days ago to find that my dealer and friend of nearly ten years bought a large estate of (gulp) Canadian coins. Included were a number of nice coppers, and I instantly fell in love. They were so nice and so dirt cheap, I had to buy some. I spent a total of $16 on over a dozen late large and early small cents....and I think I'm gonna collect a date set of them.

Having said that, my specialty is still Lincoln cents and will remain Lincoln cents....but these Northern coins are so cool looking!

One of my purchases (for a BUCK!!):

  • It always starts like this:

"Having said that, my specialty is still Lincoln cents and will remain Lincoln cents....but these Northern coins are so cool looking!"

The next thing you know, you're drowning in the vast multitudes of copper that are available when you open your eyes and look beyond the narrow borders.... you will yield to the darkside.... bwahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!

CD: I have always admired that particular coronation image of King George V. That's a very nice coin -- especially for a dollar!! image

The darkside may be the future for many collectors. It can be very interesting and easy on the wallet.

  • At least it is copper. Now that would be shockingly scary if you bought a coin of some other metal!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Wow! Those early British pennys are tough in high grade like that. They may be
cheap but you won't find them for a few dollars. Even VF's are tough for dates like 1870.

  • Here is one of the nicer CN large cents that I have owned. I had it for quite a few years and gave it away to a fellow RCC'er in last years "Holliday swap". He was thrilled and so was I. It's not often that a young guy like me gets to please an old time collector.

Well, cheap compared to the US anyway .... and, 3 years ago they were a whole lot cheaper.....get 'em while you can.

Coppercoins, see the bosox threads for some monster Canadian cents.
  • Well, you still have some wiggle room. As of now, you have only ventured into the grey sideimage However, once you take a step away from the lite side, you have ventured onto a slippery slope and it will only be a matter of time until you are swallowed up by the lure of the DARK.
  • Hey, hey, hey, welcome to the darkside.

I agree those old British pennies are nice...really nice. They show off all the best aspects of a well stored copper. I find that the designs on darkside coins are generally much more asthetically pleasing than on our coins, and they are cheaper too. Two big pluses. St. Gaudens is the only U.S. coin designer who holds a candle to a lot of what's out there in the abyss.

While I'm on the subject, anybody have any use for an entire bank bag of BU 1967 British large pennies? I know where 7 bags are.

If you like George V silver, this one year type isn't all that expensive until you get into the high MS numbers.
