Ok, is this Jefferson NT or AT?

Here's a softball up the middle. You get this one wrong, you turn red. And by the way, while I've had a lot of fun here lately (you know, like having a colonoscopy) it think it would be great to take just a little while out to look at some cool coins and share some opinions. What about you? Maybe we could convince some of the newbies that this is a good place to hang out.

(And for you new coin collectors, NT means naturally toned and AT means artificially toned.)

AT although PCGS, NGC and ANACS have slabbed a few of these.

If I saw that in person, I would pass. It's pretty but I don't trust the color.

Oh yes........I have a definate opinion on all of those very deep cobalt / gunmetal blue toned proofs.
  • Real - but not market acceptable according to the TPC's these days - to me the giveaway is in the toning specks on the left field in front of Jefferson's neck and face.

even though that is AT, it looks pretty damn awesome. My personal opinion about AT vs NT is that there is no difference. As long as the coin hasn't been damaged , it's the same thing. NT is AT. It's just that you didn't plan it and it took much longer. IMO though, I don't care for toning. Blast White is awesome. If you have an old coin that is blast white it makes me feel like I am in that year and the coin has just been minted. Toning on older coins makes everything feel old and stale (granted there are exceptions).

It's truly funny, no make that truly sad, that people in this day and age are so wrapped up in their own little world that they refuse to try and teach someone else the correct or accepted way of doing things.
  • I'd be inclined to think it was NT only if someone could find some record of one with these colors in an auction catalog at least 10 years old, prior to the huge premiums for toned coins. Hard to believe that these just started turning up recently unless someone was cooking them.

    I'd say 100% AT.

By the way, Adrian sold me this.

It kind of reminds me of the color I AT'd on this Sac a while back when I made some. I did this to some AU coins I pulled out of circulation to help me tell what an AT coin looks like. Only now I'm paranoid of any coin that has colors even vaguely similar to the ones I came up with. It's good though because it keeps me from buying everything toned that catches my eye.
  • Nice coin...I remember that Elephant token.....still second finest...if that was in fact the case?

Still second finest slabbed, I think - I never check the pops. Realisitically, its probably in the top 5 of surviving examples. I'm sure some of the colonial heavyweights have some nice ones but we may not find out for a quite a while. And I really thought that John Ford would have a red one, but he didn't.

I have always believed these to be tuff ones. I think there are many AT's out there...but some NT..all I know is PCGS holdered this one that I am selling on ebay right now.

Edited to add: Ohhhh....and that one is NT...I can see a small scratch (at 12'oclock) on the holder it is in - probably NGC.
  • It's graded by ANACs as Proof 67 6 steps. No indication on the holder that it's AT.

PCGS has graded some of these but I think they have stopped holdering them but I could be wrong.

I've heard conflicting stories about these.

In any event, both ANACS and PCGS and I think also NGC have holdered nickels that have this look.

I have a bunch of them. I think they're cool. Right now they're cheap. Someday they may be expensive. Who knows.
  • AT/NT! image Nickels that look like that have been graded by PCGS and several TPGs - I understand that if iyou have one that looks like this, it should not be cracked out to try and upgrade as there is a strong probability that it will be returned in a BB. So, depending on when it was (or is)submitted, it is NT/AT. Frankly, I think it looks neat and if it wasn't too much I'd buy one for educational purposes. image

Looks nt to me, especially since some board members have some of these that were still in the original mint packaging.

  • I think they are AT, but I'm really drawn to them anyway.
    Buy/Sell/Trade Rainbow Morgans
  • I saw some like these in PCGS holders at a coin show a while back, and they really stand out.
I think they look really neat, almost florescent blue or purple in color.

But then later I read that there was some possibility of a scandal with some of these. But I didn't see any more details on it.
