Mariano Rivera for Cy Young Award!!!

Yep, forget about Schilling and Santana, who the Yankees beat today. Mariano has 52 saves with a slight chance of tieing Bobby Thigpen's all time record:

Sparky Lyle, the Yankees' ace reliever won it 1977. I am not sure if there ever was another reliever who won it.

  • C'mon Gemmy10, Santana is a lock. If he went more than 5 today, the outcome would have been entirely different.

Gemmy - respectfully - being born in The Bronx, I share your affliction with The Yankees. But you should get a brain-check on some of the stuff you post before you post it. You have either eradicated some brain cells via living through the 60's-70's (I have) or have a memory problem.

The following relievers have won the Cy Young Award : Rollie Fingers, Willie Hernandez, Dennis Eckersley, Bruce Sutter, Steve Bedrosian, Mark Davis and Eric Gagne. This is in addition to Lyle. I hope Rivera gets one also. Regards.

LOL. Usually I am very accurate and pride myself on my knowledge of baseball trivia. I guess I must have the early stages of Alzheimers. image Gagne, won it, eh? I do recall Eckersley winning it now.

Man, its sad when all of your starters are so bad that you have to campaign your reliever to win the Cy!

Bung Yung Rivera will NOT win the cy but will serve up a few beachballs in the playoffs during the 9th
    innings!

  • Joe, you are so sad. The Yanks have had GREAT starting pitching lately.

The Yankees are 1 inning away from winning a double header against Minnesota, who has great pitching (I hope I didn't jinx them). They already beat Santana today. Maybe the Yankees will be Santana's daddy too.

How are your Phloundering Phillies doing? Like I said, so sad. I don't know why other people or me waste our time with you.

I'd have to disagree with relievers being nominated for Cy Young, just like I would shy away from a pitcher winning MVP.

The only exceptions is if there are no outstanding performances in starting pitchers (like Gagne in the NL last year...he was just so dominant).

    MINNESOTA Today Season

IP H R ER BB SO HR PC-ST ERA
    J Santana 5 3 1 1 1 5 0 71-48 2.61

1 run 3 hits in 5 innings - You guys really stomped him! Before the game, the Twins said he'd only go 5 innings. Seriously though, nice win for the Yankees off their bullpen and Mussina really settled down. I'm not just saying that to appease you, since most people didn't know Santana was only going 5, the Yankees got a really nice spot and my pizza and beer dinner was paid for by the Yankees. image

  • Brian,

OK, good point but joestalin feels to realize that Lieber, Mussina, and El Duque (I hope he stays healthy) have been pitching very good lately, in fact better than the combination of Boston's best 3 starters. After all, the Yanks are Pedro's new Daddy.

Axtell...I hear you, but times have changed. True to the man honored via the award, and if my sourcing is correct, Cy Young completed 749 of the 815 games he started....But what is a "starting pitcher" anymore. They are expected to get their team through 5-6 innings before the "specialists" take over. Regards.

  • Santana should win it....but those voters always have a hard on for Schilling....always.

Poor Schilling, always in the shadow of R. Johnson. It would be nice for Schilling to get a Cy Young finally. I know Santanna has been remarkable, but its no disgrace to vote for Schilling. He must have been in the top three for Cy Youngs for a few times. All great pitchers should be able to earn at least one CY Young, just like Cone, Gooden, and Saberhagen.

Mariano for Cy Young. He may just break the season record for saves and then you have to consider it. Schilling and Santanna should also get votes.

In the NL, you could make a case for Johnson. His wins are not up there, but that has to do with his team's lack of a good bull pen or supporting cast. His Strikeouts, and ERA are right up there.

I don't believe that a pitcher should be the MVP since the Cy Young to me is the pitching version of the MVP, but how many years during the Yankees dynasty has Mo Rivera really been the most valuable player of the Yankees? Where would the Yankees be with out him? With that said, even though the playoffs don't count towards the Cy Young or MVP voting, tonight was another prime example. I stand by my prediction that Mo will win the Cy Young. Heck, he could be a "Dark Horse" and even win the MVP this year.
