Lucy...thanks for the great giveaway, you are a class act!
One positive thing about coin collecting is all the great people I have met and conversed with over the past several years. The willingness to help others in this great hobby is overwhelming at times!
Something i found interesting today happened durring Chemestry class. We were discussing elements and we happened to flip to a page discussing AG(Silver) On the page happened to be a pictrue of the reverse of a Morgan. A few kids discussed how that coin was made soo long ago and must be worth a lot of money. Everyone in my class knows i collect coins so they proceded to ask me if i had ever seen one of thoes coins. To everyone's supoprise i pull out my 1879 Morgan pocketpiece and everybody gasped...it was quite funny.....I love coins just because of the history behind each piece of matal...where it was, who had it, who bought what with it....all of that drives me crazy with facination..and i love learning as much as i can about that..
What's "Positive about our wonderful hobby"? The coin connection, the people connection (though I've been distant lately) and the kid connection. I love the hobby. Whatsmore, I can pass it on to my munchkins to further the process. Thanks for the chance to enter!
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
Hi Lucy! There are two things that make coin collecting great. Stories and the people. 1 - The stories that coins tell. Everything from a common date well circulated Merc to a Binion dollar has something to tell us. Youjust have to know how to listen. I have been learning stuff about American history by accident! If you're not too carefull, you actually might learn something! 2 - This one has already been mentioned a few times - It's the people I get to meet. I have gone to coin shows just to hang out with people like Merz2, Ksteelheader, and a bunch of other people. The main reason why I went to Pittsburg was to meet the forum people that I would not have a chance to meet any place else. Coin collecting has actually got me out of the house a lot more in the past few years if I hadn't collected coins.

Please enter me in your give away. The best part of this hobby is the beauty of coins from around the world, as well as some of the best people in the world that you are able to meet.
Are you coming to our show in Albuquerque this weekend? 55 tables, all sold out, and lots of dealers from several states. If you do come, look me up, I will be there the whole show.
We also have the worlds largest Hot Air Balloon Fiesta starting here this weekend.

I like Ikes!! But I especially like Viking Ships, Swedish Plate Money, and all coins Scandinavian.
Enough good things have been happening on the forums to keep me coming back for more since April, 2001. Many good hearted, caring people, and lots of pretty coins to look at Even though I haven't bought a lot of coins lately, I still enjoy the comaraderie one finds here.
Very neat coins, Lucy. But we expect nothing less from you. I, like some others, would like the coins to go to a YN, if my name is chosen. I would like the CD, however.
I like this forum because of the knowledge that is here for the asking, the friends that I have made and later enjoyed at major shows, etc. There are some hard times here, but every family has their good days and bad.
As for me, I'm fairly new to the hobby, but I'm having a great time with it! I just got my Dansco Type album in the mail today and I've been putting what coins I have in it! Still a long ways to go!

Nice 2 mark commemorative Lucy, you should drop by the darkside more often. Darkside collecting is more focused on the beauty of the coins and less on the monitary value. Here's my only German coin:

Hey LUCY! The best part about this hobby is the good people I find. Yes, there are some negative aspects, but that is the case with most things in life. Where else would people just give things away out of the goodness of their hearts. Where else would people offer helpful advice and knowledge for no cost. This hobby is great, becuase the people make it great. I also feel sad that a few have taken our hobby as a dishonest way to make a quick buck, but when people like you decide to post a give-a-way for the good of the forum, it makes me realize what is positive about this hobby.
Thanks for the oppertunity!
PS Another great thing about this hobby is the forum babes being so nice!
What's cool about our hobby is the coins of course! What's cool about this board is a certain hepkitty that bebops a smile on my face everytime I see her post.

I can quit collecting anytime I want to.....I just don't want to!
Lucy, Enter me in your givaway please! I have 2 positive things to say about the greatest of all hobbies.......... First is my 7 year old son. I think he enjoys coins as much as I do. We talk about it almost every day. I am taking him to his first show on Sat.
Second is YOU.........You do more for this hobby than anybody else that I know of. You are a very generious person. (I'm not TRYING to suckup, Just telling the truth) Thanks, Joe
The post I referenced earlier was my response to ANACONDA's Post "Why some dealers and many others don't post here". Please View. Sorry about this confusion. Lee
Something positive about the hobby. This is easy. When you golf, horseback ride, go to a ball game, shoot skeep, play pool, whatever else all you have left is memories, photos, and or reciepts. When you collect coins you get to do your hobby and still have what you spent money on.
Thank you Lucy thank you. I can't enter. As of a few minutes ago after reading another post I flat out quit. No more. The only coin I'm keeping is a lovely toned 1984 NT Olympic commen dollar that I bought from Anaconda.
I love that Prussian zwei Mark. Very beautiful design. I would have to say that the best thing about this hobby is all of the friends that I have made that enjoy doing the same thing I do. Of course majority of them are on this forum but it is nice to know that there are people out there that I can turn to to ask advice from.
Lucy: What a breath of fresh air your post is. Just what we all need. I love collecting coins because I've been doing it for over 50 yr, and now I am getting my 7yr old grandson started. His enthusiasm "rejuvinates" me, and allows me to think positive about what's happening in the world today, (which he will have to live in tomorrow).
I'm the Proud recipient of a genuine "you suck" award dated 1/24/05. I was accepted into the "Circle of Trust" on 3/9/09.
Well one positive thing about the hobby, smart and fun youth like me are learning about and enjoying the hobby you enjoy, and will plan on carrying on the tradition.

I always find some coins to be more fun to collect. Especially those that tend to have a good story behind them. Such as the 1909 VDB having a uproar over the tiny vdb initials on the reverse. Or the uproar over the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, when it first came out. Or all the trouble the mint went through trying to get people to accept and use the new small Flying Eagle pennies. Et cetera.
I got back into coin collecting after about a 25 year break because my wife became interested in collecting Mercury Dimes. I have been having fun collecting again ever since. Thanks, MrSpud
<< <i>All I ask is that you post on this thread and tell me something, anything, positive about our wonderful hobby.... >>
Positive things:
- I no longer have $ to buy drugs. - Added weight of metal in my home makes me less likely to blow away in a tornado. - The flash of a MS coin cured my blindness. - I'm no longer going to Hell, because now I worship a Saint (Gaudens). - My only womanizing involves bust coinage. - Danger of fire from open vats of acetone helped me stop smoking. - Manipulating shiny objects makes my mental illness much less apparent.
The funky German coin is, as earlier said, a Prussian two mark piece from 1913, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Napoleon being pushed out of Prussia. Saxony also issued a coin in 1913 commemorating the defeat of Napoleon's army at Leipzig. That one isn't as dramatic in design, but neat nonetheless.
The guy on horseback on obverse is the King of Prussia at the time, Frederick William III. The top legend, "Der könig rief und alle kamen", translates roughly to 'The king called and everyone came'.
The reverse is an allegorical image, not too hard to figure out.. Germany is the eagle (it's one of their national symbols, notice the revs of other coins) and France is the snake.
There is an edge inscription of "Gott mit uns", common to all German silver of the time.

As for the good thing about the hobby, plenty of good people.. enough, in fact, to have already said what I was gonna say
The cool designs that are on coins. That's what I like best. Some of the people you meet are really neat and some others aren't. That's why I like coins best about coin collecting, they never say mean things.

The Darkside coin is a Prussia 1913-A . Nice details on the coin. And I dont have this coin yet.
BTW Please enter me
Edited as I see someone already answered your question on the coin
Majority of the people on this forum are fantastic! The information on this forum pertaining to numismatics is invaluable and very helpful!!!! Also, the most important info is that I agree with you Lucy!!!!! I have found this hobby very interesting in a historical sense.

I go along with all the reasons so far and would add that I really enjoy the "hunt" for that coin I'm missing or want to upgrade.
I also enjoy the reactions from family when they hear "how much I paid for a quarter"...
