The most positive thing about our hobby is the variety of awesome people you find enjoying coin collecting. This place is a fine example, even considering the nonsense that's been in evidence recently.

  • Hi Lucy... thanks for the giveaway... but coins look awesome! image One positive thing about this hobby eh? One thing that has impressed me, and that I thought was a very cool idea, is the organizer of the Baltimore Coin and Currency Shows and the Lakeland Collect-O-Rama does a Free Handful of money handaway to kids at the show... it's mostly junk coins, lots of dark side stuff, low grade circ Buffs and Wheaties... but the Kiddies LOVE it!! They get to stick their little hand in, and grab as much as they can in one handful, and they get to keep it... image The joy on their faces when they go through their finds, is just spectacular! I would love to see this type of thing at more coin shows, especially the major coin shows...

    Here's my input.....

When I started 30 years ago, for the first time, it was due to my grandmother. But, due to distance, etc, we never collected together. I was lost and taken advantage of.
So, now that I have a kid, even though he is only 2 1/2, I am putting things together for him so that:
    1) He doesn't have to get a lot of "older" coins that are too expensive to feel he has a good starting collection
    2) He and I have a hobby together since my body is getting rundown and I may not be able to play sports with him too long
    3) He can build a sense of accomplishment by learning and growing the collection
    4) Worst case scenario, he has a solid base of "investment" for his college/later years (I am trying to put $100 a month into his savings for college so he doesn't have to sacrifice coins)
    5) I have learned a lot from people on RCC and this board (good as well as not so good) and I hope he becomes one of the YNs like Jeremy and even Cammie (well, no stalking of the women on the forum but the coin knowledge image )

Overall, even with all the crap going on lately, I think some of it is still positive and overall, I am happy to be here, learning, and building a collection for my boy, which I wouldn't be doing like this without a site like this.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

I like relating history behind the period of the coin, like my 1861 Trime was during the Civil War.

Who was President for my 1832 half cent. There are transitional periods in our history which many people don't care to recall.

These are great things to think about, America has a lot of history to it.

A *great* idea! Neat stuff there.

Someone posted the other day about a "coin fraternity," dysfunctional family as it may be at times. But giveaways like these perfectly illustrate it, and show what I love about the spirit of collecting and yes, even community. The generosity, the eager sharing of information and the support we show each other when we show off one of our new "babies" is wonderful and reaffirming.

We ain't the Cleavers or the Nelsons. Virtually all families have fights, sometimes big ones. Yet above it all, they are tied together by blood. Well, we're not tied together by blood. But we're still tied together with a common interest, one we want to see nurtured, protected and where we want to see new entrants coming in and welcomed without being ripped off to the point of giving it up.
  • The greatest thing about this hobby, for me, is getting other people involved. Very nice coins and a great time for a giveaway.

Lucy: I enjoy the social, historical, aesthetic and cherry-picking aspects of numismatics. It's fun to meet (and cyber-meet) with and to learn from others who share similar and varying collecting interests.

I enjoy collecting because of the beauty of specific coin series, and also enjoy like to specialize in specific series to build enough of a proficiency to be able to cherry-pick valuable coins at bargain prices.

I have gotten a lot of enjoyment from this hobby over the past 39 years that I have been collecting. I still get that wonderful child-like awesome excited feeling when I see a really knock-out coin that stirs the senses. I'll probably continue to collect coins as long as I connect with them in this same way.

Something positive: My attribution guide is coming along nicely, and when I get the first packet done I'll be sending it in to ANACS first, because they have agreed to recognize the die variety attribution system I developed....and I think that's really cool!

Another positive light...I have been through about 50 rolls of Lincolns in the past week and have discovered some new doubled die reverse cents from a date where doubled die reverses were nearly unheard of previously - 1962D. Making head way!!

Yet another positive thing...I'm having a ball doing all of this!

Gotta love a German coin when it comes out in the light. I think the design is way cool. Thanks Lucy!

The tv has been off and the x-box is collecting dust now. I have also gotten my son hooked on MD'ing as well!!!!!

I enjoy the historical aspect of coin collecting. Take my 1828 half cent for example. John Quincy Adams was pesident when it was minted. He and many other famous people could have had it in their pocket at one time or another.

If only this coin could talk. The places it's been, the things it was used for...

It's all about perspective. Step back and take a look at the big picture of what these boards are about, and how they influence the hobby. From where I stand(outsider/relative newbie) I see about 80% of people helping others and caring about the image of the hobby. The other 20% could use a little work, but sometimes you need a little negative to highlight the positive.
    Nice coins LucyBop
  • Here is something posititive about the hobby.

Because of Collecting State Quarters I found this site

After I found this site and saw the many pictures you guys post and it gave me a bug to start collecting something else.

FC57coins decided that for me with his Tutorials for Franklin Halves. Reading from his tutorials(and certain posts of his and others including the creator of this thread) it gave me confidence to go out find/grade my own Franklins. Still working on my set yet today.

I then began to get the bug to learn a different series which is the Seated liberty Half dimes. I am soon to be a new member of the LSCC( Liberty Seated Collectors Club). I have never been a member to any type of club before.

The hobby has also (thanks to the metal detection forum, Lord Marcovan and Millenium) got me into metal detection. Which, in order to find the good stuff, makes me learn History of the town I live in and meet new people within the town.

    to sum up:

    1) meet new peeps
    2) Learn about coins
    3) Dig up history( no pun intended)
    4) Enjoy every bit of it!

What more can you ask for?

I love the history of coins, the connection they have to our commerce and daily life. I enjoy the look and design of coins. They are precious because of precious metal often times. image I've always wondered why I am drawn to spend so much money on these things but I think I understand: it's the excitement of history in my hands and being a good custodian of the coin for the future. Many things in the past are lost, but coins don't have to be lost. They can endure for a longer time. They are relics of our civilization just as temples and stadiums are of ancient civilizations. Some day many many years from now there will be scholars thankful that some people here and now preserved coins in such good condition.

A neat thing about the hobby for me are the memories that I've made through coin collecting. For example, I acquired a couple of Russian coins from a family friend who died within a year of her giving them to me. I'll never sell them. Every time I look at them I think of the caring person she was. Thanks for the giveaway Lucy!

  • Hello! I am new here and have always found coins interesting. I have been reading everyones posts for a while now and everything I have read has increased my interest in collecting. I am just starting to collect various coins and my son has taken an interest as well (he is 11) watching what I am doing so now we hopefully have two more collectors to add to this great hobby.

    Thanks,

  • Groovy Coins Lucy!!! Thanks for the giveaway. I think the best thing happening in the coin community is the giveaways for kids. Here in Houston at the Bellaire Coin Show they have a free for kids coin auction. All the coins are given to the club by the dealers. The kids learn how a auction works by a professional auctioneer. They make sure all the kids walk away with a hand full of coins. Also here in Houston, at Collectors Coin Shop they give a dollar for every " A " on there report cards, in academic subjects, to spend any way they want in the store. imageimage

It's just like you to do something like this.....!
Your help in completing my grandson's Franklin set has been super.. Only one thing, tho. His favorite coin is a Kennedy!
Took him to a small shop last month. He asked the owner what he collected? I forgot what Ron said, but Andrew so proudly said "I collect Kennedys." Grrrr....

    Gotta love him anyhow.

    Nice giveaway Lucy
Nice coins--that Liberty sure is pretty.

Coins are a part of life--it is amazing that we are constantly using them and more people aren't coin collectors.

Everytime I find an older coin in change or at the gas station where I work my heart starts to race, I can't wait to see what it is.

Overall this board is a super place to be a part of because of people like you Lucy.
Education, generosity, caring, and genuine love for coins is the foundation that holds this place together and will endure.

Hope that I will be able to give back half of what I have received.

  • So what's positive...I'd have to say the "old timers." I don't know how I got into coin collecting but some how I did. I don't have anyone close to me that's into coin collecting. In other words, no mentor or guide. Therefore I need a place to turn to for advice and I've found plenty of advice here from the "old timers." I'd just like to say thanks. image

coins are neat for me because they are a link to the past.
my grandpa gave me some of his old coins and I still have them and when I look at them I remember him, RIP gramps.

  • To me, the best thing about coin collecting, is that each coin has it's own story, along with the fact that you can own a small piece of history that fits in your hand. I love the fact that George Washington could've held (no matter if he was bed-ridden, he was alive) my 1798 US large cent.
  • Its my escape from the "real" world and I get to share something I enjoy with one of my nephews!

Hey Lucy. What you have there is a Prussian 2 Mark. Book value $20-$40 depending on grade. It commemorates "100 Years Defeat of Napolean". It is .3215 oz .900 silver. Nice coin!

There are many goods things going on in this hobby today. More and more people are becoming involved in collecting coins and currency for the fact that US coinage is getting a facelift in all areas. Same goes for the foreign market. ie: Euros.

I am still new to this board and am looking forward to contributing as I can, but am still learning and probably have a long ways before I am taken seriously. Thanks again! -Dan
  • I completely forgot to add my statement about why i like this hobby.

I enjoy the history aspect of coin collecting. Imagine holding a coin in your hand that was possibly owned by a Founding Father of our country? Or a soldier in the Civil War?

President Lincoln could have had some of your collection in his pocket !! WOW ! The possibilities !

If you collect 'Darkside' coins then the history goes back even further. Kings, Queens, Noblemen, and even the common man could have used part of your collection to purchase goods or reward good deeds.

Imagine having a coin from the time of Christ. Could one of your coins been on the table that Christ overturned ?

The possibilties and history is endless.

As for my current collecting i am enjoying my time here on this coin forum learning and meeting new friends. Things don't always go the way we hope but after a short while we get back on track and discuss what's most important..............our love for what we collect.

No matter how slimy this, as well as any other hobby, can be, there are always some people that touch you in a certain way- kinda like Hepkitty's heart. That makes it all worth it. If my name goes into a hat and gets picked (I hope) then please give any coins to a youngin who can get the spark I did many years ago--But I want the kitty's CD to cherish. John
