A constructive discussion of the merits of issues associated with collecting coins is welcome and should be... personal attacks are not. Let's keep the intent of the forum intact...

<< <i>Why some dealers and many others don't post here. >>
We have some really great dealers here but most would never post here. Why would they wish to have their every action questioned? They don't need that and have no time for it. Many of you run into the big guys in the hobby at shows. Ask them why they don't post here. Would love to here their comments. Hope some of you will try this and report back.
<< <i>one thing I have noticed is that there is way too much bashing of individuals for one reason or another here. I joined these boards wanting to learn about coins. I enjoy the beautiful pictures of coins and peoples joy about their sets of coins. I want to stay a member here but I feel I'll need to go elsewhere to continue my process of learning about coin collecting if this continues. Please all let's focus on the "Joy In Coin Collecting". >>
You sound like a great candidate for the Darkside my friend.
Adrian the reason that very few of the 10,000 dealers post here is they cannot take the fire. Personally I commend you, Laura, TDN, Dale and many others for coming here to give their opinions and take heat. Lets face the fact that most folks just cannot, or will not, defend their positions, and therefore continue as observers. As one of the board regulars posted the other day, “ If you did not know that you were swimming with the sharks, you do now”. This is perhaps the most important thing that can be learned here. Collecting expensive coins is full of dangers, and you can learn many things about those dangers here. There are several posts this week from newcomers relating to the fact that there is too much controversy here. This is the fire, and many good learning experiences come out of these posts. The most important being that all of us are aggressive competitors, that dealers make their biggest profits on coins bought for $72 dollars and sold for thousands. That there are not lots of big profits in perfectly graded certified rare coins that have not been cleaned, or AT’ed. Could it be that out of the 15,000 registered members here just a handful ever have a thought worth posting? The answer to your original question is that most dealers in this business prefer to operate out of the light of day.

I think percentage wise their are more dealers here than collectors- say their are a million collectors and 10,000 belong to the forum that would be 1%. On the other hand if their are 10,000 dealers nationwide and 1,000 belong to the forum that would be 10%. For the most part I would think their is only about 500 or so reguluar posters that hang out here- maybe a hundred are dealers? These numbers I just totally guessimated but I think the real question is why don't more collectors come here? mike

At last year's ANA, I met a well-known specialist dealer for the first time and in the course of a transaction I brought up the subject of this message board. The dealer read the board, even recognized my handle, but has never posted. He said it would be too time-consuming.

I realize that the hobbyists and the dealers would probably want different things from a message board.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

This board is social and educational. Many dealers are about doing business first and are too burned out to go home and start talking aout coins.
