I paid $295 for this 1831 Bust Half (O-109).
I was taking a picture on my copy stand outdoors in the late afternoon and the colors didn't come out right (they are questionable to me anyway) so I took it again later.
After photographing the reverse, I was picking it up and it kind of slid on the base of the copy stand. Then when I uploaded the pictures there was a new scratch on it right down the neck - like a little grain of sand was between the coin and the stand.
So what coin have you ruined?

I generally do not mess with expensive coins. I am scared to death of breaking an expensive one out of a holder and not being able to get it back in. I let the guys (and gals) with the big cajones do the crack-outs.
<< <i>My most expensive was a 1909S Indian cent. Before I knew any better, I thought that some of the dark stuff would come off with a a little coaxing from the tip of a razor blade >>
Thanks for the lesson.

My only experience in dipping ruined a 1964 Deep Cameo Proof Lincoln. I think it was probably around a 68 DCAM or so. I guess I didn't rinse properly as some large dark spots developed. As I said, it was both my first and my last attempt at dipping.
