Anyone know about Large Cents???

SmittysSmittys Posts: 9,876 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have an 1802 With a X accross it but it is raised like a die crack, are there any canceled die strike for large cents. Take a look at the pic and see what you think.
Thanks,
Smitty
Now that we've decided it's a scratch not a crack, what value does the coin have, coin is lighter that full scan shows.
Thanks again,
Smitty

I agree, looks raised, no clue what it means, but it looks raised to me too.

  • Hi Smitty,

What you have is a coin with post mint damage. It was not struck with a cancelled die, although that is the typical conclusion when this type of coin show-up. I have handled several, from colonials to silver dollars. When a cut is made on a coin with a very sharp and, more importantly, very thin blade, it gives the illusion of a raised ridge along the cut. Actually, it's not an illusion, as the metal is literally displaced to form the ridge. On your coin, I can actually see the cut. I have heard of some people putting these types of cuts on Morgan Dollars and then further adjusting (artifical wear, toning, etc.) the coins to make them look like they were struck with cancelled mint dies, thereby adding great value to the otherwise inexpensive and common coin.

Furthmore, I am going to guess that your coin is S-231, an R.1 coin, but it would be nice to see the rest of the coin (obv & rev) to positively attribute the coin.

I would guess that after being cut with a knife, your coin probably circulated for a while, causing the raised ridge of metal to flatten out and mostly hide the original knife cut. However, it could have also been "artificial wear," as Dennis said.
  • Nope no large cents were struck from cancelled dies and Dennis is right about how this X got on your coin. I have seen many coins that have had X's put on them in this fashion. (There IS an 1802 that has two die cuts coming up out of Liberty's bust, S-240, but your coin is not it.

Thank you for your opinions, I was afraid of that being the case, any ideal of the value with this damage.
    Thanks,

  • Post pictures of the whole coin, both sides, so I can attribute it and judge the overall condition.

  • Hey, I had the attribution correct using just the date area in my post on Tuesday! Per your new images, it is indeed S-231, an R.1 (common) variety.
