A case of buying the coin not the holder?

or the opposite?

Linky current bid $120

Linky current bid $36

Edited to get the right coin in the NGC holder.

  • The differences are miniscule, but on a quick glance I like the PCGS coin better.

Have no clue what these are worth.
  • I like the way the NGC's holder with a bright shiny penny looks better than one being in a PCGS holder. So, I pick buying the coin and the holder together! In this case NGC.

All is well, but you cannot see the small marks that can take a coin from 67 to 66 in those tiny shots...to add, luster is all but gone in scans, which those are. With the huge difference in value between a true 67 and 66, I'd opt to skip both of those until Teletrade can figure out how to properly image a coin for auction.

Second to that I can say that NGC has a habit of being somewhat more lenient on grading higher grade Lincolns than PCGS - although not always.

  • Thanks Chuck. I was mainly interested in the price difference between the NGC and PCGS holdered coins. Both are graded MS67 RD but there is a $90 difference in the bids. The bidders seem to be putting a premium on the PCGS holder and not on the coin itself.

That's true, mainly because NGC is usually a point high grading 66+ Lincolns. They have a rather long standing track record of doing this, and most people who buy Lincolns regularly know this...thus the difference in price for basically sight unseen coins. That was my point. We're both saying the same thing, just from different directions. You put the emphasis on the holder, I put the emphasis on the track record of the company grading such coins. Same thing.

  • Gotcha! I'm just learning this stuff. Which is why I'm here on these forums. I'll have to admit though, the Lincolns have got their hook in me. I just need to know more about them from a collecting standpoint.
