New Coin Show with NO Dealers?

What if there was a pre-FUN or pre-ANA one-day show that did not allow dealers to take tables? Instead, the tables would be given to collectors. The cost per table: ZERO! The show would make money by charging admission.

Could it work?

If you're a collector, would you take a free table and sell some coins?

If you wouldn't or couldn't set up, would you pay $25 admission to get into the show?

Interesting concept Andy - I bet it would be a blast. Not only for selling, but perhaps for buying too - but be wary - you'd better know what the heck you're doing!

As a collector/seller, it wouldn't be worth my time, as I never have more than a few coins to sell at any one time. As a buyer, I would expect pickings would be slim, assuming most collectors, like me, don't have a lot to sell.

The First Annual Trade-and-Get Played. Sounds like a good idea. I would pay to attend, but would probably not buy anything of significance. I would hate to deprive my dealer friends of their cut--no, but seriously, I would be hesitant to purchase an expensive coin without my favorite dealers' advice.

It's a great idea and could probably be made to work.

There are some problems and not the least of which would be the dealers balking at
the public being admitted and offering their coins to the collectors rather than coming
back to offer them to the dealers. It might also be difficult to have everyone prove they
aren't a dealer.

I like the idea but can also see some pittfalls with it; and no I would not pay to enter a show like this.

Perhaps it would make more sense, to have a show with just dealers and no collectors.

Lately, it seems the dealers can keep busy just buying and selling to each other.

How about where collectors setup tables with Signs that say what they want to buy and dealers come to them?

I'd get bored after about 30 minutes sitting at table, but I think it would be worth attending to see what was being offered

I'd pay the $25 just to watch how the dealers work on the other side of the table.

I think it's a great idea & I would go. There would probably be some fresh material around.

Would the Collector/Dealers be able to act like some Real Dealers act ?

How about woofing a greasy sandwich down and then getting upset befroe the thing is inhaled because some person asked to see a coin. Or maybe just throwing a slab half way across the room when you ask to see it. Or letting people cover your table up with trash when a collector is trying to find a coin. Or just plain ignoring a person because he looks like he has no bucks. Or over grading raw coins by atleast two grades.

Now if I could do the above I would really like to join in just so I could see if I could Rip some unsuspecting New Dealer.....

Andy: I'd jump at the chance to get a table and sell some of my coins at a local coin show where I did not have to take the security risk of transporting the coins through either airports or other security risky situations...

I might perhaps even go so far as to expand the distance to within a reasonable days drive at a regional coin show in my area.

I think your idea, while probably not easily workable, is a fun one to contemplate because it would give those who have never operated behind the table before to get a feel for what the issues are. In the end, it may even make the collectors better at buying and generally handling themselves at a bourse setting.

I would pay 25$ in a heartbeat...I would have a field day. Dedicated collectors often have the nicest stuff...and it sometimes undergraded...
