I got my first issue of the Numismatist the other day.

What do you guys think of the Numismatist? I thought the issue I got was fair. I actually enjoy Numismatic News better. Does anyone know if they've done articles on Capped Bust half dimes or Civil War tokens? Just curious, it would be nice to read those articles.

I'm sure they have done articles on both. All you have to do is email the ANA librarian (addresses are in the magazine) and they will tell you. They'll probably make you copies for the cost of copying them, if you want.

I think both Numismatic News and Coin World have good and bad points...

While Numismatic News is rather void of advertising (it has plenty, don't get me wrong) that answers for its double digit page count, the number of articles and ratio of information vs. advertising is pretty good. There are a number of regular columns that I wouldn't want to have to do without.

Coin World is much thicker (usually about twice as thick) but also has a much higher rate of ads to articles. There are also a number of regular columns in this periodical that I wouldn't want to have to do without. It is also good for what it is, but I wish they could pare down the size of the issues and take about half the ads out. If you are into buying coins, Coin World is definitely better because a number of dealers advertise in it.

Both have decent price guides that come out regularly. If one wrere to take both of them plus the CDN to average out all their retail prices on their coins, they would come out really close to what the coins should actually sell for. Bottom line on that, none are right on while all of them together make for a good guide. I might toss Coin Prices in there too, but that one's not affiliated with either of the periodicals in subject.

I like both and I dislike both, if that makes any sense. Both have really good points, and both also have bad points, which I guess could be excpeted.

The Numismatist is greatly improved over a couple years ago. I would think that it will continue to improve. The ANA has some enthusiastic folks on staff.

Matter of opinion. Personally I think it has gone downhill. It used to be semi-scholarly, now it is more fluff and about on a par with Coins magazine. Maybe a little lower.

I've never been a big fan of the Numismatist but at least their editorial policy is improved if not the content.

I'd wager that they print every quality article that is submitted. Is it possible that the semi-scholarly articles aren't being written?

Over the last few years of reading the Numismatist I think of it as being very good. Better than coinworld or NN for my taste.

The articles have to be shorter now which doesn't allow for proper development. In the old days, space in the article could be used more for explainations, history, background etc to help bring the less knowledgeable readers up to speed before proceeding into the meat of the article, or development of more esoteric concepts. (If you just want to read articles on US coins this isn't as much of a problem.) If you try to do that today, by the time you are ready to move into the "meat" of the article you are out of space.

Conder, I agree that the articles have been shorter, but I didn't assume that meant they had to be shorter. If it turns out that longer, more scholarly articles aren't being used due to length (assuming that the article isn't unreasonably long), I'll be the first in line to complain to Barbara.

  • The Numismatist is alright... but I rarely read more than one or two articles... if that... mostly because I'm a specific collector, and the Numismatist is a general numismatics magazine... I much more enjoy the John Reich Journal, as it was all about Bust coins, which I enjoy image

  • I joined the ANA back in October and am generally satisfied with the Numismatist. I have received 2 issues that had nothing of interest for me, but always something in the rest. What I would like to know, do most of you who are members of the ANA save your magazines?

I like the Numismatist & Coin World. I find Numismatic News not as much fun as the others.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
