need help, error coin ?

what would make these marks next to the reeding?

  • these marks actually go half way around the coin.

    Are you referring to what looks like a collar clash? Here is a poor pic, but you can get the idea.

    This is "collar clash". The obverse (hammer die) struck the top of the collar, or scraped along its working face (or both). This transferred an impression of the ridges on the working face of the collar to the rim gutter of the die. This shows up on the coin as characteristic serrations on the top of the rim.

    It's quite common.
