I am in a quandry and cant get out!!!!!

well, I have been slowly building a 1973 topps baseball set in psa8 for 6 months now. I recently purchased 2 high numbers on ebay, but they were sgc 88's which i intended to get regraded with psa.
I received them in the mail today ....and ....well..... even though they are just commons they look so nice in that holder!!!!! I have forgotton how nice sgc holders look

My quandry is this. do i continue to build a psa set and insure my investment (even though i am building this for pure fun but i would like to make sure there is a small measure of getting a good chuck of my money back if i needed to sell) or do i go for the sgc set and pay less for the cards and in nicer holders but future value may be diminished.

i know i am not the 1st to face this. I was curious to find out what others have done in this situation. Either way i will still collect for fun but i know psa holds their value better than sgc. Am i wrong???

looking for thoughts from the experts!!!!
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

SGC holders do look pretty nifty. But if you ever plan to register your set, or sell it as a group, my choice would be to sacrifice that small amount of aesthetic superiority in two cards to have a uniform set.

Another factor, however, is that you'll have to be pretty lucky for those SGC 88's to cross to PSA 8. Since there's a good chance they'll drop to PSA 7, you have to take that into account.

    crack em
    Good for you.
  • Last year I finished my 1973 set...NM+ to NM/MT.... Most of it is raw, but I have several graded cards. My Bench, Mays, Clemente are all PSA7/8's. I have a P. Rose in a SGC 88, and if not for a print spot I'm sure would have been a 92 and I paid $12.00 for it on ebay! lol...

And for kickers, I've got the Schmidt in a GAI 7 and for the life of me I can't understand why it is not higher. I've seen several PSA 8 or SGC 88 that didn't look as good as this one.

That being said....PSA is where the money is! Do you think I would have gotton the SGC 88 Rose for $12. if it was in a PSA 8 slab? Doubt it!

I do like the SGC holders more than PSA's...

But I really like the top label GAI puts on the cases. Make searching very easy! I wish the others (PSA, SGC) would get in on that!

It doesn't matter to me which holder(s) I have as long as they are from the big 3 (PSA, SGC, GAI)..I no longer consider Beckett in the top tier ever since I bought a 1972 R. Clemente BVG 8...that looked more like a weak 7 (but that's another story)
But I wouldn't break out the SGC's unless you are putting it on the registry..

    Just my .02!

  • i would leave it graded in the sgc holders. If you like them and your not planning on selling there is no point to switch the cards over. If you do need to sell in the future you could crack them out when that time comes and resubmit. Besides are you really going to make money by paying all those grading fees and potentially getting knocked down a grade here and there?

  • for the aesthetic appeal you mentioned SGC is a darn nice holder and by the same token GAI 's holder looks nice but is problematic (the gasket).

in the end, a 660 card graded set undertaking in anything but PSA holders, at best, would be very tough.
  • you could always leave them as is until you get a few others to crack or decide to build a mixed set. Either way it'd delay the decision - we all know what that feels like to have to decide.
  • If you want to finish the set in graded form before the world ends, you beter stick to PSA. There's a much better selection out there; besides, most of the commons you can get for $5-10.

  • I don't buy SGC to start with on cards like this.
The holder is nice. The service is good and I have found a reasonable chance of crossing with them.
The problem is $$ plain and simple. For cards that can be had under $25 you do get some discount but by the time you figure in Crossing fees at $10 per or crack and resub for at least $6 per, a chance a damaging during cracking, a percentage that don't cross even if it might be fairly low, extra postage, time, energy, sweat and tears and the like. It isn't worth the hassle. Buy it in the holder you want, no matter which one, and leave it there. But I wouldn't recommend mixing for a set, seems like it would appeal to fewer at sale time if it is a mish-mash of companies.

    gentlemen,

thanks for the opinions and ideas...these were 2 hi # cards that i bought at a very good price!!! they look exactly like the other psa 8's i have so i am confident the will cross.

I guess after a day to think about it i am going with the majority on this one and go for all psa since they seem to hold their value. like i said i love this set as it was the 1st one i ever collected as a kid and i cannot forsee a time i would sell it but if i had to i would like to maximize the investment....even though 73's are not exactly a investment grade set!

I appreciate your i ideas and Dave Read i have seem your auctions but i keep getting beat!!! oh well, i will keep trying!!!

Again, thanks for all your ideas and opinions

  • I'm in a bit of the same quandry... I have a few PSA's in my set that I've debated crossing over to SGC. Then I discovered GAI's idea for a set registry that takes into account SGC and PSA graded cards. I have to say I really like that idea as I could just keep cards in the holders I bought them in and still have the fun of collecting for a registry set.

As to when GAI will have this up and running however....
