I looked around a bit and could not find references to it. My memory isn't the greatest, but I believe that I've seen that mark on a legit circulated trade dollar before that had three other chop marks on it. If I stumble across it again in the future, I'll make sure and let you know.
It appears to be the mark of a stylized chrysanthemum, the official symbol of the Emporer of Japan. I have seen these before and they appear on many things other than coins.
I've seen chopmarks on coins other than trade dollars, myself. One that springs to mind is a chopmarked seated quarter I saw on ebay once about three years ago. Maybe this is one that circulated in the orient for a while.
