Free 3-M Anti-Tarnish Strips

In case anyone is interested, I was just surfing the net looking for coin preservation info and ran across an offer for free 3M Antitarnish Strips. The site says "Put these safe, non-toxic strips near (not touching) your polished silver, copper, brass and gold keepsakes in an enclosed area such as a drawer, storage bag, flatware chest, jewelry box or hutch. 3M Anti-Tarnish Strips absorb tarnish-causing chemicals in the air, keeping your possessions sparkling bright. Each strip protects one cubic foot of space. Change strips at least every six months. Reseal remaining strips in bag with tape." "New on-line customers can get a FREE $5.99 package of 3M Anti-Tarnish Strips! Pay only $3.77 S&H."

These basically contain activated charcoal. I first heard of these from Magicbilly and recognized them when I ran across the site. Here's a link to the site offering them Link I think I will take them up on their offer.

  • It also says Free S&H on orders of $25 and no charge for S&H on the free item if you order something else with it. Order $25 worth of the strips, get the free one, and don't pay shipping on any of it. image

Should be good for safety deposit box?

One thing interesting about this - they specify replacing the strips every 6 months, which makes perfect sense as the copper, or whatever the sacrificial anode is, combines with the sulfur, etc. and is no longer active/available.

I'm not aware of any replacement specification with Intercept Shield or the new Dansco album sleeves. SO the question remains, for how long is an Intercept Shjield really protecting your coin?

I think on the intercept site they describe an experiment where they exposed coins in their boxes to what they consider to be 10 years worth of hydrogen silfide gas. Theoretically, that would indicate they may work for at least ten years. But if you happen to live in an area that is more polluted with one thing or another, their estimate of ten years may not apply. I like the idea of using copper foil as an tarnish "interceptor" because you can visually moniter it for signs of excessive tarnishing (and change your storage setup if you think that it is tarnishing too fast) and also because you can "recharge" the copper foil with a light sanding once a year or so to expose a fresh surface of untarnished copper. On the other hand, according to Intercept's patent, they are doing some tricks to increase the surface area and/or absorptive capabilities of their boxes. With their older copper impregnated plastic bags, you were supposed to replace them if they turned dark in color from absorbing tarnish.
