  • I agree with the 63, but the middle band seems a bit mushy. Perhaps just the photo, but for that kind of money I'd prefer a clearer picture.

  • Looks frosty, but I'd wait for a 67FB image

  • Cleaned to death?

It doesn't look cleaned at all. Seriously. It still has luster and looks like a 63 to me. It might be overpriced but thats all. Post some pics of your Mint State 1916-D before you start bashing others coins.

It is hard to tell what that mint state mercury dime really looks like.

The lighting appears to be a florescent bulb (which we all shy away from at shows and in general).

The use of the floresecent bulb which is very white in itself makes the coin look more frosty as well as white than it really is.

This may be the case here.

Cleaned? probably not. Dipped? More than likely.

But for $15K it is at near MS-64FB prices.

Whoosh, those prices are real strong!

not only that Kark - but now this seller is suspect to be!
Look who bought this dime - a guy that's been buying DVD's for $20 all day long. Nada a coin purchase in sight image
I contacted him prior and asked for detailed info on this dime - and you know I mean details (Oreville r u listening? image oh by the way you're right stupid money for 63FB unless it was really nice..............image well all I got was a 1 line response if I recall something about "the coin is lusterous and frosty....." I truly do not recall word for word but I dismissed it immeadiately with the curt response. Seller also added he's not selling it for any lower off EBAY either in case it does not sell. Sounded arrogant to me - his previous sales also don't add up to justify trusting himon a 15K purchase so I would be leery on bidding regardless on this dime.

Soooo I concur this dime ends up in a Heritage sale soon or some likely avenue etc.

    To be continued

With those pics there no way to tell if it's FBs.

of course it wouldn't look cleaned to you. you're used to seeing blast white 88 YEAR OLD COINS in plastic.

by cleaned to death, i do mean DIPPED, which is a form of cleaning.

I like it...a lot. To me a rare coin is a rare coin is a rare coin. why bother quibble over minor details??
  • Coin looks fine... doesn't look cleaned... overpriced, and pictures are too crappy to pass any judgement on the bands, and besides, if it was the same camera position with clear pictures, the bands would still be hard to see clearly from that angle... sometimes looking at it from an angle can make it look like it shouldn't be a full bands, especially a coin that's just right on the cusp of the FB designation...

  • IMO, this coin is attractive and not dipped, but I can't see the full bands either.
