Updated with grades: How much are Norse Medals going for?

I've got a thick and a thin Norse medal in MS63. I keep a spreadsheet of all my coins to inventory them, and like to include the value of the coin. Any idea what these guys are worth? Is there a price guide that has values for 'em?

  • I think the last time I priced one in MS63 it was going for around $200
  • Thick or Thin Frank?

  • Thick in MS65 are going for about $300.00-$400.00 and Thin for approx. $1300.00-$1750.00. I'm only going by what I saw at the Long Beach Show recently!

Your best bet is to check Heritage Auction archives for prices. I picked up an NGC MS62 (thick) on ebay a few weeks ago for $103, which I thought was a good price. That's my one data point.

  • Al, I purchased a Thick and Thin in MS65 from a dealer, I've dealt with many times before, at the LB Show. The Thick was $350 and the Thin was $1450.00. Don't really know if I overpaid because there's not a whole lot of past auctions with these medals. I purchased them because they had great eye appeal. I purchased a 1794 Franklin Press Token MS65 at the same time so the dealer reduced the price some.

  • This is what I received for $350.00 MS65 Thick Norse. The medal is actually much whiter than shown. The Thin I have in for reholder. When I receive it I will post it. imageimage

Checking Heritage's Auction Archeives is your best bet on determining value on MS 63 Norses.

I have a PCGS 65 Thick, that I picked up on Teletrade a year ago, and it cost me $525. Its basically white with light rim toning. Its a super looking "coin".

I also picked up a Thin in an NGC 65 holder this past March from a dealer outside of Las Vegas; its blast white (probably conserved, but its got a thick skin of luster, and doesn't looked dipped) and that medal cost me $1,600. Its an amazing looking thing of beauty.

  • Keets, yes it is those 2. I gave them a good acetone soaking, then I dropped them off at ANACS Friday. They prescreened them both at MS63. I hope those grades hold up.

Everyone else, wow, I think you've accounted for about all the 64's and 65's that are out there!

I've got to say, these medals really fascinate me. I'm Norwegian, they have a different shape, low mintage, and an interesting story. I've tried to do some research into them. I'd like to pull together as much info on them as I can. If anyone knows of any good sources of info, forward them on.

I got the grades back. The thin held up as a MS63, and the thick came back a MS64. I'm real happy with those grades.
