My local dealer has an 1880-O Morgan in a fairly new PCGS MS-64 slab. He offered it to me for $1400. On closer inspection I noticed that it's the VAM 6A overdate. Top 100. I passed on it.
There is a fingerprint on Liberty's forehead and the field in front of the forehead. There are way too many marks in prime focal areas. If it had been even a middle of the road 64 it would have been a nice score.
At 63, the value drops a grand or so...

You made the right call. I'm a big fan of both the 79-O and 80-O.....the big step for each coin is ms65 & ms64 respectively. First and foremost you must be absolutely certain that your coin sits comfortably within the grade (even in PCGS holder)------secondary considerations are the horizontal mm's & overdate vams, & then toning------otherwise it's a no-brainer pass.
I own both dates in 61, 62, 63, & 64....looking for 2 ms60's and I'll call it quits, the 79-O is too pricy in 65, especially when considering other options in the morgan series.

79-O----I like MS64. Especially if vam4. I cracked a pq icg 64 that I thought had a shot at 65 at pcgs....came back a 64--solid for grade.
80-O----I like MS62. call me crazy....but it's a bargain, especially with either flashy fields, attractive toning, overdate variety, or micro O. IF you can pick one up for under $120 today jump on it.....a little over a year ago you could "steal" one for $60-$80.
