Do you know how holed coins are produced?

Not the kind that Lord Minivan collects, both the kind that come from the mint already holedimage

Are the planchets holed before striking, or is the hole punched out by die? I imagine they're already holed, but I'm having trouble visualizing the minting process.

Good question. I'm not to sure, I've never read anything in a book about it. But my guess would be some time of inner collar, possibly attached to one of the dies.

Good question. I never thought of that.
  • I have no idea, frankly. On one hand punching them by hand seems extremely laborous, but on the other hand there are mint errors with the center hole not being punched. An example are some Norwegian issues around the end of the first world war, IIRC.

  • My thoughts are:
They use a special pair of dies.
One die has a recess, the other die a raised portion.
The already holed planchette is placed in the die, and wam, out comes a nice coin.
But then the coins tend to stick on the raised center portion die. So this doesn't work all that well.
So they simply make the dies as normal, and strike already holed prepared planchettes and everything
comes out nicely holed like you see. Usually in looking at the coins, you'll note that the center shoulder or rim
is a bit wider than normal as the die simply doesn't strike this part all that much, thus they don't get a lot of distortion
    in the center hole area.
Nothing fancy needs to be done.

  • It depends on the coin. Some are made with the planchet pre-holed and others are punched after striking. (known from the evidence of error coins. Blank planchets with the hole and the hole is larger in diameter than on the finished coin, and in other cases struck coins that missed getting the hole punched out.)
