Grading help please---Numismatic Gifts!!!

I just got back from California visiting my husband's family. My brother-in-law had some coins that he had swapped some electrical stuff for, a dozen old gold pieces, 2 bust halves, 8 or so Morgans and Peace, and some misc. He showed them to me and so I got to hold some beautiful old coins. Right before we left he handed me these two, I still can't believe it. So please help me grade my first old gold. I'm thinking somewhere in the XF/AU area, and they have been cleaned, no cartwheels except in the protected areas. Thanks for your help!!

Do I have the world's best brother-in-law or what?

  • I would like to take a reaaal close look at those 2 gold pieces. Perhaps it's just the images, but they look counterfiet to me. The "fabric" doesn't seem right. Again, it could just be the images.

DorkGirl, they look AU or better but possibly/probably (at least lightly) cleaned.
  • maybe he expected you to get on your knees and give him a hug... image

but in all seriousness if those are genuine, you've got a killer brother in-law!

Dennis, are you seeing anything in particular (other than the cleaning) that looks off to you? I'm not implying that you're wrong, just asking.

uhmmmm look ok to me, but i dont collect gold in series, just a few types.
Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.

No. The coins just look "flat", for lack of a better term. Again, it's probably just the images. I have owned many counterfeit Libs and, after awhile, you start to get a feel for the counterfeits. The good news is that they are still made of gold and sometimes they are even overweight and too large in diameter. We just sold two counterfeit Libs to a dealer and they went for decent money, although less than the real thing. DorkGirl, if you can weigh the coins or measure the diameter, that would help. Probably the easiest thing to do is to take them to a local dealer and get their opinion. Or, if you want, you can mail them to me and I will give you my opinion. I will pay shipping/insurance both ways. ANACS is another route to go, but they would be net graded for the cleaning that you have identified.

Very kind offer Dennis. Let's try this first, I photographed the $5 coin with direct light. I'm so used to silver, I always shield the light with paper because of the glare. This is how they really look.image

  • That image is a lot better. Probably Net AU-50 or so.
