  • I wouldn't know, looks like a nice coin though, although the reverse looks kind of funny to me, although the strike is amazing on this piece. Sorry don't know the overton number, im not a half collector yet, im just opinioning on a nice looking coin.image

Perhaps it is due to the poor image, but that coin looks heavily cleaned to me.

I'm not home, so I don't have access to my Overton. However, the 1823 comes with several distinct, and disfigured, numberal 3s in the date, so the variety should be found fairly quickly. I like the clashmarks on the obverse above the date where the scroll is plainly visible. The coin looks like it's been dipped a few too many times, but there still appears to be staining on the obverse. You should look at that closely to see if there is any damage to the area.

I don't know if I agree with 108a, the DE and TI don't seem to properly fit the 108a reverse. I also can't seem to pinpoint it to anything in my overton book.

I do agree with the cleanings though.

    Terry,

It is definitely an O 108a. 3 separate die cracks define the variety.
I would grade the coin XF 45 to AU 50. But the staining on the obverse may be environmental. Check it under a good magnification.

    Good hunting

  • Thank you all for your replies. I bought this coin on the contingency that it was an O-109.
There seems to be many similarities in the 108a and the 109. According to Overton the 109 has a more defined cracks across the Bust and the die crack reaches through star 1 and up to star 5. The reverse also has no center dot. It is just not possible from these pictures to see if this is a O-109 until it arrives, but the die crack does seem to go into star1 and also seems much heavier across the Bust than the pics. Overton published on the 108a. I thought perhaps one of you might have an O-109 and could make a comparison.

108a...note the lack of serif on inside of A2 of your coin. Also check A1 in relationship to dentical.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
