Halves at my Credit Union

Every time I go to my Credit Union, I ask if they have any halves. Occasionally they will give me a few out of their drawer if they have any. Yesterday, when I asked, the lady said she didn't have any. Then she said that if I wanted a whole roll, she could get me one out of the vault. That bothered me a little. I've even asked if they could order me halves in the past and they had said no. Well, I asked her how many they had. She counted and came back saying $290. I said I'd take them all. I had a hard time convincing her I was serious. As I was getting ready to leave, she said that she was happy to get rid of them, as they have had to inventory them daily for over a year now. This tells me that they have been there a long time, and they knew they were there.

Well anyhow, I got a couple nice rolls of 40% silver, 3 rolls of bicentennials, and 4 rolls of halves from the 80's and 90's. I had enough to get a full set of Kennedy's except for the mint set only issues and the 64's. At my next poker game I'm going to use the leftover halves and give everyone 50 of them instead of chips. Are there any common errors or varieties I should check for?

  • This opens a new avenue for me. A really good friend of mine works at a credit Union right next to an airport. Im going to send her an email about their inventory.
Wonder if this will turn into anything.

  • Check the backs on all of them for the initials "FG". If it dosen't have it it can bring a lot of money depending on the date and condition. Also check the 1974D's for the DDO(Doubled Die Obverse).

I have looked twice for nice halves from my credit union. This is my result:
Lot 1 - $100 worth, 200 pieces direct from the coin counter. Net one 1968 40% silver half, all the others were clad 1971++. Conclusion: Not worth the effort.

Lot 2 - $100 worth, 200 pieces direct from the coin counter. Result: 100% modern clad. Conclusion: Not worth the effort.

I still have about $150 worth of half dollars to get back into circulation. The waitresses around here seem to like them...... Will take several months to get rid of them.

I will try again after the first of the year.

  • I've struck silver just about everytime I've found halves. Even got a few Franklins along the way. Hopefully this trend continues.

Are you talking about Kennedys only?

  • Neptune:

Yes, the initials FG are Frank Gasparro's (he engraved the reverse of the Kennedy half.) There are several date varieties that do not have the FG initials. FG is located just to the right of the shield, between the eagle's tail feathers and right leg (the leg that's clutching the arrows.) image
  • At least if you live in a state with casinos, you can use the leftovers in the slot machines.
