The Lakesammman collection sold (some images added)

Yeah I know, this probably belongs on the Registry or BST board. But Lakes is a great contributor here and deserves recognition for the incredible Flying Eagle and Indian Head cent collections he's assembled. I just noticed Rick Snow listed a preview. The scarey part is I don't think this is all his coins. Incredible...

Edited to add some of his great copper images, scroll down.

Ron - By the description some are being sold by Rick, some have been sold elsewhere (recently), and it looks like he's holding on to a few of his favorites. Now that I go through the list more closely I believe this is basically all his major coins, it was nice of Rick to list them all together like that. If you read the Adobe file at the top it states that Rick will be using many as plate coins for the "Official Red Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents".
  • It's..........Nice.

Just a sample of the dream coins in this magnificent set:

1856 S-3 PCGS MS65 (the record price is all you need to know about its quality)
All 3 of the 1857 Flying Eagle clashes with other denoms (quarter, half dollar, $20), and I believe the finest known of each
    1873 Doubled Liberty PCGS MS65RB
    1873 cl3 PCGS MS67RD (only IH to grade 67RD by PCGS 1865 thru 1875)
    1886 T2 PCGS MS66RD (1 of 2 finest known)
    1888/7 PCGS 64RB (finest known)
    1894/1894 PCGS MS66RD (finest known)
  • I wonder what he is keeping! If he is selling everything then I have to ask "what's next?"

  • Wow! A lot of those coins went fast.

Good luck with the consignment. I'm sure Rick will do a phenomenal job for you.

Great collection. Why are you selling?

I posted this message under registry:

The LakeSamm collection is being sold by Eagle Eye.
    Check out the details here

The collection contains all the top varieties popularly collected in the series. The ultra rare 1888/7 is the finest graded (pop 1), as is the 1873 Double LIBERTY, 1866 Doubled LIBERTY, 1864 No L Doubled LIBERTY, 1894/94 (pop 0), 1867/67 as are many others. The 1873 Closed 3 and 1886 Type 2 are the finest known, pop 1! The super coins in this collection seem endless.

Also included in this collection are patterns (some of which may be offered in the future) including the ultra rare 1856 with the Ornamented Wreath reverse, J-184, again the finest graded, Pop. 1. Three other 1856 Flying Eagles are included - Snow 1, Snow-3 and Snow 4 die pairs. These are the three main design combinations: Tilted ONE CENT reverse (S-1), High Leaves (S-3) and Low Leaves (S-4). The highly coveted Snow-3 is a top quality example in the true MS holder (PCGS and NGC no longer put any 1856 in a MS holder). (the Snow-3 sold for a record price to another dealer prior to listing) Additionally, both 1858/7 overdates are included! The Snow-1 is a gem (and also sold for a record price to another dealer) and the ultra rare Snow-7 is finest known.

Prices will be published tomorrow and pictures will be forthcoming. A catalog will emerge with all the coins listed, but time does not permit me to do all that work prior to selling the coins. A few of the coins were bought by a compatriot who lives alot closer to Tim than I do. I told the pilot to hurry!

  • An incredible set! Congratulations, Lakes, on such an impressive accomplishment. Sorry to see it broken up. These coins will sell very fast. Lakes was a very astute buyer and only purchased coins that were either very high end for the grade and/or possessed incredible eye appeal. I would recommend collectors move fast if they wish to acquire some of these pieces before they are all gone.

As to the reason for selling, It may have something to do with his completeing the collection to his satifaction. There were fewer and fewer coins he needed. In the latest Longacre's Ledger he put in an article: "The Unattained Goal Attained". No one has completed a set with the high leaf and low leaf 1856, 1858LL and 1858SL or the 1870, 1871 and 1872 bold N and Shallow N. He did. And he threw in some great other pieces.

Many of these are features on shklocks web site I believe.

Now there is a new goal. Top Lakesammman! That still begs the question, what will Lakesammman do next?

I am sad to see Lakes' set get broken up. He must be sad too. Too bad I was not ready to buy all of them up!

But I resolved to put everyone at ease by finally putting up my flying eagle set up on the registry set system.

I put up my AU-50 1856 FE cent up just to make sure it qualified as a non proof circulating coin and was shocked to see that one lonely coin in the set put me halfway up the list towards the top even though many others had far more coins and higher graded ones to boot.

For some reason, contrary to the normal way I collect, I LOVE EF-AU flying eagles!

Thanks for all the nice comments and PM's. I decided to sell the collection for about 10 reasons, none of them having to do with timing of the market, etc. The collection evolved beyond what I set out to do and it's been a great time. I'll continue to be involved in numismatics and am looking forward to the next adventure. Will continue to participate actively here - this is a great community.

There are going to be more coins/varieties offered on Rick's site than are currently listed and eventually around 35 patterns 1856-1865. I'm not done building the pattern set!imageimage

The next "Flyer" project is shown below. I spent a lot of time and effort on the collection and there is only so much time and money to go around. Flying involves a real time committment and it's something I've wanted to do since getting my license in 1979. Will be bringing it home next weekend from the East Coast and look forward to gettijng back to Alaska next summer. It cost a "Pretty Penny" (well, actually 2-3 of themimageimage). The "N" numbers include LS - I figure it was meant to be (LakeSammman).

  • planes... why do we all have to have something that sucks us dry, but is worth every stinkin penny?!

not sure if there's anagram's for aviation, but here's our vices.

and racing, no anagrams, just sayings. "Speed cost's money, how fast do you want to go?" and How do you end up with a million dollars in racing? Start with 2.

Tim - It figures you'd buy a plane that comes with a waterproof slab.

While everyone sounds a bit sad that you broke up your collection, it's great to hear that some of the time/money/enjoyment you spent putting it together will now make another dream come true. I'm also glad to hear that a catalog is forthcoming that will keep your collection together forever, not to mention Rick's "Red Book" project. Most of my interest in the IH series rubbed off from you. You shared more incites, images and enthusiasm than owners of major collections normally do, so I almost feel like I'm watching my own collection being sold.

Maybe we should run a contest to name your new toy. Pretty Penny, Eagle 56, Trading Up and High Leaves are a few that come to mind. Promise us you won't name it Broken Wing or Hole Filler image

Given your love for Alaska, major FE/IH varieties, and the color of the plane, SNOW 1 would make an appropriate name.

I've been reminiscing over all the photos Tim has emailed me over the past few years. Here's 4 very tough dates that any IH lover would swoon over:

    1. 1859 PCGS MS66 - so many at this grade level disappoint
    2. 1886 Type 2 PCGS MS66RD - show me one that's close to this
    3. 1888 PCGS MS66RD - one of the most undervalued dates that always looks overgraded
    4. 1897 PCGS MS66RD - another undervalued date at this level, one of the last holes he filled
    image
  • 1886 TII is the best. Should be in the basic set registry. If I had $60K I would buy it in a second. I guess trading my au-55 1856 FE wouldn't even do much of a dent in that price!

The 1888/7 MS-64RB PCGS just sold from the LakeSamm collection $85,000. Cheap considering a 1916/16 buffalo in the same grade sold for about $250,000

Tim may own his own airport before this is over. The image he supplied to the Fly-In-Club of his 1888/7 was the clearest I'd ever seen, text or internet. I'm not surprised someone was waiting for this example to hit the blocks.

    Jom,
Yes, the "Indian" is not an Indian, it is Liberty with a Indian Headress, just like the $3 and $1 gold (Type 2 & 3) and St. Gaudens' $10. Longacre considerd the use of the Indian Headress to show LIBERTY represented by a people who were free by right of birth (even as we were taking that freedom away).

  • Hey Rick:

You're not comparing apples to apples. The 1916/1916 Buffalo was not a Red Brown!!! I'm surprised you didn't take some of those to auction. Could of collected more for that 1888 over 7.

Besides the 1964 L on Rib Proofs, is that not the highest price paid for an IHC??

Rick. Regarding the 1864 L Proof in the Richmond collection. Which one is that??? Is it a restrike or original???

Tim's 1888/7 exceeded the Epstein 1899 MS68RD record for a mint state IH publically sold. But I think even Tim would agree it should be classified differently as a variety. The IH variety that has the potential to sell for much more is the 1873 Doubled Liberty in PCGS MS64RD, the only red graded example known. The IH that has the potential to be the highest priced small cent of all-time, 1864 L proofs and varieties included, is Stewart Blay's 1877 PCGS MS66RD. I'd be interested to hear from Rick what he would price that at tomorrow if it were consigned to him.
  • shylock:

That 1899 68 was SECOND place in the Gorrell auction. The 66RD 1877 sold for $77,625. Most forget about that coin, because of the 1899 68.

  • shylockshylock Posts: 4,288 ✭✭✭
lloyd - you're right and obviously know your IH's! The price of both MS68's in that sale jaded me and I overlooked the 1877. Having seen both Stewart's and this example makes me even more curious what the Golden Princess would sell for this market.
  • EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think Stewart's coin should sell for well over $100K, possibly close to $200K if it got the upgrade to a 67RD it truly deserves. (he'll probably post I'm way too low). The 1888/7 is a record for a non-1864L Proof. I think the 1873 Dbl Lib would probaly take some honors if it came on the market.

The trouble with the 1888/7 and the 1864-L proof is that they are both so rare few collectors can buy them in any grade.

Considering there is a young billionaire living on Long Island with eight
1864 L Proof Indians including two full original red ones and another man living upstate with two gems they become very rare to acquire.

Word has it there is an 1888/7 in ms 65 red that is not yet slabbed.I believe it could bring $250,000
