Rec's for 1st. Gold Coin

Today is my Birthday and I want to buy myself a first gold coin.

I was looking at a 1/10th GAE but maybe I'd prefer something older.

Pro's/Con's and suggestions Please! image

Are you on a limited budget? Do you just want gold, or are you more interested in something with some numismatic value??

It depends on your budget. If it is about $50, I would buy the GAE. If you can go higher, you could probably get a nice AU Inidan or Liberty quarter or half eagle.
  • I definetly want a gold coin, and would like it to be under $100. and of course something that could gain value would be great. obviously I don't want to buy an old coin for $100 that in this market that could end up being $25 if things hiccup. Which is why I was looking at GAE's, as they are easy to track and know value, aside from numismatic value.

I doubt you'll find anything other than modern bullion for under $100, unless it's a very damaged classical gold piece. I think a $5 GAE is your best bet, and its price is generally melt + a small premium.

    Old, gold, AND cheap.

Not an easy combination, but I can do it! image

And since it's your birthday, I'd knock it down to 15 bucks.

  • schweet! LOL I know for a fact that I'd lose that.

I already lost one of the two 1/20 or maybe smaller K-rands that are in my great uncle's collection for a couple days before I noticed it glistening in a corner

I lost one of those in a friend's living room, once. We tore the place apart, lookin' for it. Even tipped the couch upside-down and banged on it. No coin.

A year later, his wife found it when she was sweeping dustbunnies out from under the 'fridge... in the kitchen. How it got from the living room to the kitchen is a mystery.

BTW, you shouldn't practice your slingshot or juggling skills with gold coins. That's how they end up lost in dark corners. image

  • Hey LordM, you still selling those? I may buy one after I mow a few lawns.

BTW, good luck with your new set!
  • in regards to the GAE's, should I spend a little more for the low mintage 1988? or go for a proof?

Investment-wise, albeit a small one, I would go with a lower mintage 1988. Collector-wise, I would go with the proof.
  • thanks for the input everyone, keep it coming!

    heading out to party now!!
  • You want old gold and under $100 try darkside gold. Netherland 10 guilders from 1857 to 1889 or german five marks from the 1880's can be had for under $100 in Unc and they had two tenths oz of gold in them. The 8/30 Coin World had the Netherlands pieces in Unc for $89.95

Same issue had French 20 Francs 1871 - 1914 for $81.95 also Unc, also two tenths oz.

Check out the British Sovereigns, as well as the French "Angels" and "Roosters"

For US coins, you might have to stretch toward $150 but could get a Lib or Indian quarter eagle.

    good luck!
