I tried the potato cleaning trick

Well I asked LM if it would really work and he said it would but me being the doubting Thomas that I am had to give it a try. Well to my amazement it worked like a charm. I a potato about the size of a baseball I stuck 15 different aged coins from old roman/greek to nasty dirty wheat cents. Well the only one that didnt do a think was the steel cent not a thing happened. But actually all the others im amazed how well it worked. The green verdegris is gone and I can actually see some writing on some of the roman/greek coins all the copper came out nice and clean compaired to what they looked like when I started. Mind you to keep me safe I only used broken and slugs of the roman/greek. So if they were ruined they really wouldnt be because they were all ready worthless. Now to see if I can find some better ones and give it a try with them..

Who knew you could do more the bake mash or fry potatoes.

So how's the trick work?? Just shove a coin in a potato and let it sit over night, or how long? Sounds neat image

When you say the copper was clean, what did it look like? Did the color change?
  • A potato? Who would have thunk it?

  • Well like LM will tell you is that it depends on how well you want it cleaned. I left mine in for 4 hours and took an old tooth brush to them. Well they dont come out looking like nice shinny lincoln cents but compaird to they way they look they are clean. For a second try I took some that were still gunky and left them in for 24 hour and they cleaned up rather well. Now mind you all im using is some old junk chipped broken nasty romam/greek so if it ruins them its no loss to me. But still I can now see some faces and heads and some letters but as for telling you what they are I dont have a clue they are rather far gone. When I bought them I only paid like 4$ for 20 of them most were slugs the rest were broken. LOL the laugh is that they were supposed to have taken all the slugs out.

I really think if you go the potato route you need to be carefull 20 years down the road they might start to sprout some nasty green vines.
