being a newbie I always thought tone was from a coin being in an environment over time... I saw an auction for a couple 2004 nickels with tone...
how is this done and why?
(im not a big tone fan... just wondering)
thanks

this is a legit question... people seem to liek toned coins and while I dont... i dont want to purchase a coin that is old and has tone that might have gotten it through some manufactured process....
again im pretty new to this... I like nice clean coins.... while some toned coins look pretty cool... i dont see the draw .... especially if this is manufactured.
anyway..thanks for any replys
Oh and Welcome to the forums!

I don't think that was in reference to you LBGrob....just the subject matter that comes up constantly and is probably one of the top 3 things talked about here. You're new so welcome! But...make sure you have thick skin to survive around here
Edited to add: Damn robertpr, you beat me by seconds!
i have been watching posts for a while... and didnt see anything on manufacturing of toned coins...
but then again i probably didnt really look as im not a big fan..and a tone subject might have caused me to pass it up
That's called a "forum snipe"
As others have said, the tone/white/AT (artificial toning) threads abound around here. We beat it to death on a regular basis. Do a search for key words and you can find lots of good stuff.
Again, no offense was meant. Welcome to the board!

Good advice...I wear a full suit of chain mail when at the boards.
