As far as I know that's untrue. There were four different die pairs used to mint all 480,000 coins, and none of them had a weak S.

I have heard of a weak V.D.B., but not a weak "S" mintmark.

News to me. That's probably a tale first told by someone who was adding weak S mint marks to 1909 VDB cents.
