Wow, it was looking a little doubtful, too. Going into tonight's game, I believe he needed 20 more hits in his last 12 games. Now it's only 15 in 11 games to break the record, if my math is correct.

Single season accomplishments are worthless if their team doesn't contend?

Teams can't contend every year...that mean we should pay attention to single-season accomplishments from those teams?

    Seems pretty short-sighted to me.
  • >>Big deal, his team is going nowhere. <<

It IS a big deal. He deserves a lot of credit for what he's accomplished in his whole career.

  • His whole career? What has he played, 4 seasons?

So, make it "career to date" - sheesh.

He already has more hits in a 4 year span than any other player in major league history. It's just too bad he didn't arrive in MLB sooner...as he'd easily have pushed Rose from the all-time hits record.

In addition, he's done it all with what may not appear to be a huge spotlight from the US media, but the media in Japan goes nuts at every opportunity to showcase Ichiro.
  • Anybody that cares so little about winnning that he bunts with two outs in a tie game and a man on second just to try and increase his hit total perhaps doesn't deserve the respect of fans.

I read that garbage article...he did it what, twice, in September, while his team toils 30+ games behind? It's not his fault his team is playing so poorly this year. And if he weren't this close to the hits record, would ANYONE have noticed? I hardly think that doing this twice in a year, to appease the fans as well as chase the record, while his team is laughably out of first, harms the team at all.

And if he didn't care about winning, would he put in the hours and hours and hours of batting practice, watching of game film, etc etc?

    Talk about trivial.
  • I think it's crap, too, axtell. Give the guy his due.

BTW, I just watched him get #246 a few minutes ago. He's now 3-for-5 tonight, and will get another plate appearance in the 9th.

Raul Ibanez has 6 hits tonight! Apparently that hasn't been done since 1962. image
  • 247! He's 4 for 6 tonight, with 9 hits in his last 2 games.

    11 more for the record.
  • <<I read that garbage article...he did it what, twice, in September, while his team toils 30+ games behind?>>

It sure is a garbage article. Some writers should hang it up, really.

Ichiro will be the 1st Japanese player to make the Hall of Fame, without a doubt!

I'd love to see him break it in 154 games. Hmmm he'd need 10 hits in 10 games? It's late and my math is probably off.
