Possible New Buffalo Variety

I think I may have a new Buffalo Nickel Variety,
Under magnification it looks like an S over horizontal S.
It is graded as an Au 53 1919 S, But the mint mark looks funny.
I am not able to shrink the size of the jpg down enough to post,
If I could e-mail it to someone, Maybe they could post.

Mark

That looks like two things to me.
    1) A chipped die in the upper loop
    2) An added mint mark with the dark area around the S
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

Is that coin in a slab? If it were an added mintmark, no true grading service would slab it.

That's pretty interesting. There is definitely something goin' on down there.

This reminds me- I keep meaning to post a pic of the mintmark on a 1935 D/S (?) Mercury dime I found with my detector. It really looks like an RPM, to the point where I can't decide if it's a D or an S mintmark. It's a fairly well-circulated piece and a dug coin, of course, but I thought it rather interesting.

Verrrry interesting. I know a couple of guys who could do photographic overlays to see if that shape under the primary mintmark matches the curve of the S, it would have to line up exactly to be an RPM. If you're willing to send the coin out for examination, and you don't already have an attribution deal set up with another forum member, PM me and I'll try to hook you up with someone who can give you another opinion.

Looks S over S to me. Whatever it is, great score. Listen to Sean, he can help you out.

Could be a match...overlay shows it's close. I'd have someone inspect that bugger.

    chuck,
What about the mintmark being inverted? Can you make and S over inverted S?

It wouldn't fit the description of an inverted mintmark. The shape of the secondary mintmark has all pointers to being a horizontal mintmark...the curve to the left, the large curve inside the upper area of the primary. I just don't see an inverted mintmark at all.

    Mark,

Very interesting Buffalo. It could be S over horizontal S, but I think it's a regular old RPM. Either way, it would be a new variety.

I don't think this is a mere RPM. Thanks to coppercoins kind assistance with his excellent overlay image, I would say you have a good shot at a major new Buffalo variety. Based on this overlay, it sure looks like an S/horiz S to me. And, since it's in high grade and, especially, in a decent die state it should make attribution relatively easy. I, too, strongly recommend submitting this to CONECA. If it turns out to be an S/horiz S you will get a nice certifcate from James Wiles that will proclaim you as the discoverer and the first to report the variety. I've discovered a number of new varieties and can tell you it's a good feeling seeing your name listed as the first to discover and/or report a nice new variety. And, if you are interested in this type of material you certainly can't go wrong by joining CONECA, NCADD, or both. You'll learn a lot and come to realize what a fascinating field errors and varieties are. Good luck with your discovery!
