Some help on phrases used in coin collecting

What is toning?
How is it done?
What is meant when someone says "red" when referring to certain coins?

I was wondering because I have a large amount of coins inherited from my grandfather. Mostly Mercury dimes and Wheat pennies but also some Barber and Washington quarters and a few Buffalo nickles.
