Your opinion of an item ordered but never received..

I recently ordered a numismatic book from a used book seller (not on ebay, but on Amazon). It has been over a month since I ordered it and I contacted the seller. The message that I got back was "I put the book in the mail, you did not request insurance, so there is nothing I can do for you...". He requested that I speak to someone at the post office in his town who will "remember" that he mailed the book a month ago. I asked for further proof of mailing, so I am waiting to hear back. Any thoughts on next steps?

Yes. You can contact your credit card company and dispute the charge. They'll issue you a provisional credit and investigate your claim. If it holds up, they'll charge back the seller.
DO NOT do this if you used PayPal.
If you do a charge-back against PayPal, they will close your account, since the charge-back will be against them. (It's in the PayPal user agreement - you have 30 days to file a claim with them)

<< <i>Most of my Ebay auctions I charge enough shipping so insurance is included and is not an option. When I don't I make it clear that the buyer can buy insurance if they want. If they don't and the item is damaged or lost in the mail....it's their loss. Period. Can't make it any simpler. >>
If I expect the item to sell for less than $50, I make insurance optional for an additional $1.30. If I expect it to sell for over $50, insurance is included in the shipping amount and is not negotiable.
