Has Anybody Tried This Auction??

Has anybody ever tried one of James Reeves mail-bid auctions? Or bought from his inventory? You can bid via the net. NO pictues though. I emailed them asking about cleaning, dipping, etc but haven't gotten a response. Also, everything I looked at was raw.

  • I never heard of this dealer. I looked at the web site in your link, and it seemed professional to me. Not having pictures is unusual. You may want to order something small, and see how good a job he does before spending real money.

Name rings a bell, somehow, but not for any positive or negative reasons- I just think I've heard the name, that's all.

I like dollardude's suggestion- you might wanna limit yourself to bidding on cheaper stuff if it is raw, sight-unseen material. I have a hard time justifying any raw, sight-unseen purchases anymore, in this digital age, but will still do it for less-expensive stuff now and then. There are only a few dealers I would unreservedly buy a better coin from raw and sight-unseen, and I could count them on the fingers of my hands. Maybe the fingers of one hand.

PS- in the dealer's defence, though, some folks who put up large sales or bid lists every month simply do not have the time to post pictures of it all- can't really blame them for that. And a lot of them are very good dealers who move large quantities of coins. So test the water before you jump in, and if it's not too hot or cold, dive on in. image

They have been around a long time. I remember buying a few things from them over ten years ago. I beleive I felt I got what I paid for at the time. If nothing has changed they should still be giving good descriptions. Good luck.
  • Actually, I first came across them about a year ago. I believe it was in Coinage magazine. I even sold them some model trains. I had forgotten all about them until I came across a ad in the August issue of Bank Note Reporter. So, thought I'd take a look.

  • I received a email from Reeves Co. today stating. "Any coin that has been cleaned, damaged, etc. is typically noted in the description." So that's all I know.
