Currently, I don't have one. They sell very well when I do have them. And...I agree with you they tend to be undervalued.

  • I'm trying to get one for my type set in F or VF. My type set is last year of issue (regular) and that's the one for two cent.

    Did I say image?

PCGS PR 64 RB. It is richer than those photos suggest. Proofs are desirable because so few business strikes were produced that year.

I am sure many own them. I sold mine when I sold my complete set.

  • Here's mine ... XF-40. Small scratch on the obverse shield, but overall very pleasing. These have really gone up in the 4 years since I got this one:

Does anyone have the pop reports on the business strikes? I wonder how many are extant?

    yes.

  • Well, PCGS pops for an 1872 business strike is 130 total (at least was in January), though I don't know what that would translate into as far as total number of pieces extant. With a mintage of only 65,000 and a number of coins melted (I read about 1/3 of all two cent pieces were melted after production ended -- don't know how many of those were 1872), the total number of extant pieces can't be too high. Guess that's why they cost so much more than other dates in this series. image

Yep. And even though they cost "much more" than the rest of the two-centers, considering its mintage and extant population, it's *still* a bargain because not a whole lot of people collect the series by date.

If this coin were a Lincoln cent or a Morgan dollar, you could probably multiply the current value by 10.

I have one. If memory serves me (I'm at work now and don't have my inventory list handy), it's EF.

If you're interested, it is for sale. PM me for details. I haven't listed it yet, as another board member just bought a bunch of 2 and 3 cent pieces from me, and said he might be interested in the pricier dates in the near future, but no committment has been made.
  • I have two of them, a Good that I paid market for when I got it and a F-12 that I bought from a dealer as a common for $10.
  • Much more common i Proof than UNC, I sold mine with my set in 1996.

2 centers are still very undervalued

I pick them up from time to time in grades of Vg thru Vf for re-sale purposes. Always seem to sell pretty easily, although I dont carry one in my personal collection any longer. I used to own a very Nice Au-55.

Be careful as many of the grading services tend to overgrade this coin. I know that this date/coin comes weakly struck on occasion(WE), but I bought several at Vg only to send them in and they came back anywhere from F to Vf-20.
