Hello All - I have Another PCGS Grading Question

I have a couple of Geo III guineas that look a nice XF to me and I would like to have them authenticated and graded. However, many (if perhaps not all) of my 200+ year old gold coins may have been cleaned at one time - if even 100 years ago!

My question is this: Will PCGS body-bag these coins? Will they at least authenticate them, or does the inclusion into the 'body-bag' for cleaning mean that they stop the analysis right there?

Anyone know *for sure*? Thanks.

  • Try asking this question on the Q&A Forum. (Click on the Navigation pull down menu at the upper right of the screen.) The only reason you wouldn't get an authoritative straight answer there is if they don't want to publicize the information. Good luck.

If PCGS would not grade your gold coins, and I don't think they would, you could get them NET graded by ANACS.

Otherwise, their answer will be send them in and let us take a look.....but only after they've lightened your wallet (no refunds for a bodybag). It's best to show the actual coins to a dealer or experienced collector who can at least give you an informed decision before wasting your money.
  • Thanks for the advice about going to the Q&A section.

Well, I got an answer from David Hall himself. Couldn't get any better than that! His response is reproduced here, in case anyone is interested:

We cut a little slack on the really old coins. We'll body bag them if the cleaning is harse. If the cleaning is light, it will be a negative and the grade will be a little lower.

    Thanks,

    David

    Sounds just fine to me.

Dave said pretty much what I would have expected. For early British gold you really want to try to get them in a PCGS holder, PCGS vs. NGC or ANACS can mean a lot of money on a Guinea.
