I would say not recolored, very nice overall, scattered pitting that isn't bad, but an "under $500" coin to me. 1803 is a very common date that nobody seems to want (excluding major varieties).

Above average looking, for the type. IMO probably "warshed off" fairly long ago but not harshly cleaned, and now retoned to a fairly natural color. I like it as a nice VF-EF as a type coin and think it would look great in a Dansco album image (provided the price is right)

Very nice looking coin. I can see why some folks think it might've been recolored or somethin', but even if it has, I still like it.

I think some of the color confusion might also be an unconscious reaction to the coin being on a red background.

the telltale sign that it's been recolored is that the wide expanes of the fields are darker then in the crevices, like at the edge of the portrait & around the leaves on the reverse. any time you see that effect, it's a near-guarantee that it's recolored, probably w/ deller's by someone who is'nt quite expert at it. in reality, the opposite toning pattern is more likely - darker in the recesses where dirt gathers, & lighter in the fields & on the high points, where more rub occurs.

someone who's really good & takes his time can certainly simulate the proper color scheme, but such was not the case w/ this coin. nonetheless, i would gladly own it. commercial xf-40, eac vf-25-ish, imo.

Note to non-EACers: EAC likes to "grade" ultra conservative, but they PRICE the coin just like everyone else does.

I personally like to call this grade "Fred"; however, I PRICE it just like the market does, as an EF or so.

it's a misconception that eac grades are "conservative". we use a different grading standard altogether, & w/in that standard grading can be "liberal" or "conservative", just as w/ ana grading.

it's unfortunate that the "official ana" grading system chose to use the same terms as the eac system, then applied the terms to a different grading standard.

  • If the color and surfaces look ok in hand I would say:
    EACers would grade it 25
    TPGs would grade it 35ish
    I would grade it $500
I would not part with my 500 until I had it in hand for a good look see.
Does it come with a return Priv.?

while we're on the subject of 1803 cents, here's another one for comparison.

The only difference in color I see at the devices appears to be the product of lighting, not retoning, and I have a pretty good monitor. It looks great, the only reason I can see someone doubting the originality, from the pic, is how clean it is. This non-expert loves the look of it.

    w/out a better digi-pic, i'd put baley's excellent coin around eac xf-40.
