I am passively working on a 68 Tiger team set in 8's. I saw this Stanley in a 10 with over six days to go in the auction - it's already over $700!! 68 collectors, is this expected?

It probably is not altogether unsurprising. There are numerous individuals who are upgrading their PSA 8 and PSA 9 1968 Topps sets - and the Detroit Tigers team set also draws tons of attention. You combine those two factors - and add in the notion that a large number of the high-grade PSA 10s seem to have found semi-permanent homes in collections - and there seems to be a lot of demand for upgrades, with not as much supply out there now.
You add in one or two new set collectors to the mix - and you have a bidding war on hands. I am not a 1968 set collector - but I would say that I am not terribly surprised by the current bidding. (with a note that I sometimes am surprised that more people don't simply just snipe....)
ps - snipe or die

Several years ago I traded 3 vintage Gem Mint PSA 10 commons from an issue I didn't collect whose eBay value was $400 each for one 1968 Topps Jim Northrup PSA 10. Some people thought that was insane but at the time some of the low pop 1968 Tiger commons were selling for $400-500 in PSA 9.
As A Tiger fan, I think your St. louis comments should be removed from the record - although they did make me laugh!

Neither of the 2 high bidders on the 10 had an interest in the 9, though.

Congratulations to the winner: Ron Ritt! There's not a better collector in the hobby than Ron!
Strong, focused collectors building incedible sets chasing a low pop card. But wow, did they over pay.

If I follow the path here, do I really get a 68 Tigers team set in PSA 10 at five figures?
Yeah, it would probably cost you at least $15K to get a '68 Topps Tigers players set in 10. A PSA 10 Kaline will probably be at least a $4K but more like a $5K or $6K. Neither the Lolich nor the Horton have been graded 10 yet, so when either of those show up, those two will probably command at least $2K each. The Team card also a big dollar item. There are a few cheap Tigers players like a Freehan or Hiller since the pop is relatively high, but the rest are pretty low (2 or less) so count on each going for over $1,000. Also, I just noticed that a Ray Oyler PSA 10, 1 of 1, went for $1469 and the top three bidders were $995 or higher.
i think i long time ago he came on the boards and said he didnt care wether he made money or not with his set.
he something along the lines...that the money for these cards was disposable income, so he would spend it regardless in casinos, women or just die with a big fat savings account.
i never believed that simply cause you have money and a willingness to spend it, it makes anyone less of a collector.

I agree but only if there is joy in doing so (and in Ron's case, it sounds like he loves collecting). I still have a bias in thinking of the "commoditization" of sports cards to the point where it jusy becomes a number and a certificate ID.
I, of course, do not know Ron and I don't want to sound like I am disparaging him. I apologize (once again) if I had done so.
If I win the lottery and have tons of disposable income , I will pay whatever it takes to outbid the next guy if i want it. if I have a passion and the cash I am going to put them together. resale has 0 imact on the decision to bid. of course I will never win the lottery since I don't play and will always be the guy collecting on a budget

It sure seems like a lot of 1968 Topps owners have seen this as an excellent time to sell their Tiger PSA 10 cards...
