1968 Mickey Stanley PSA 10

I am passively working on a 68 Tiger team set in 8's. I saw this Stanley in a 10 with over six days to go in the auction - it's already over $700!! 68 collectors, is this expected?

    Jim-

It probably is not altogether unsurprising. There are numerous individuals who are upgrading their PSA 8 and PSA 9 1968 Topps sets - and the Detroit Tigers team set also draws tons of attention. You combine those two factors - and add in the notion that a large number of the high-grade PSA 10s seem to have found semi-permanent homes in collections - and there seems to be a lot of demand for upgrades, with not as much supply out there now.

You add in one or two new set collectors to the mix - and you have a bidding war on hands. I am not a 1968 set collector - but I would say that I am not terribly surprised by the current bidding. (with a note that I sometimes am surprised that more people don't simply just snipe....)
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Your last comment about sniping is so true. How much are these guys unnecessariliy driving up the price of this card? It should be fun to see the final hammer.

it's a shame that St Louis didn't win that series, then all of this ugliness could have been avoided

  • I'd agree with MS's comments -- the current high bidder is a big Tigers' collector, the other 2 bidders are set collectors apparently looking for upgrades. If the other 10 doesn't reside in a certain set, I'd expect a very beefy late bid/snipe.

I'm not surprise at all and it will probably go even higher.

Several years ago I traded 3 vintage Gem Mint PSA 10 commons from an issue I didn't collect whose eBay value was $400 each for one 1968 Topps Jim Northrup PSA 10. Some people thought that was insane but at the time some of the low pop 1968 Tiger commons were selling for $400-500 in PSA 9.

    thebobs,
As A Tiger fan, I think your St. louis comments should be removed from the record - although they did make me laugh!

The Stanley finished at $1,026.01, but it looks like a 1968 Gates Brown is going to blow that price off the map. Mama Mia!!

  • a PSA-9 version of Gates Brown closed at about $500 this weekend, I guess this was just a warm-up!

Neither of the 2 high bidders on the 10 had an interest in the 9, though.

WARNING: Be sure you are sitting down, and better yet, have a stiff drink before checking the final price on the '68 Gates Brown PSA 10.

  • Maybe they misread and thought it was that other "Mickey" guy from this set.
Strong, focused collectors building incedible sets chasing a low pop card. But wow, did they over pay.
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

With these kind of prices, maybe there will be a flood of 68's getting graded. Then the prices can come down and I can afford to finish my Tigers set.

Now I see that another popular Tiger player is up for auction on eBay: a 1968 Topps Jim Northrup PSA 10. The pop is 2. I'd be curious to see how this one ends up since I mentioned earlier in this thread that I aquired the other one several years ago by trade, but the market value of the items I traded at the time was $1200.

  • So Dude,
If I follow the path here, do I really get a 68 Tigers team set in PSA 10 at five figures?

    Fuzz,

Yeah, it would probably cost you at least $15K to get a '68 Topps Tigers players set in 10. A PSA 10 Kaline will probably be at least a $4K but more like a $5K or $6K. Neither the Lolich nor the Horton have been graded 10 yet, so when either of those show up, those two will probably command at least $2K each. The Team card also a big dollar item. There are a few cheap Tigers players like a Freehan or Hiller since the pop is relatively high, but the rest are pretty low (2 or less) so count on each going for over $1,000. Also, I just noticed that a Ray Oyler PSA 10, 1 of 1, went for $1469 and the top three bidders were $995 or higher.
  • Time to look at my 68 Tigers. Amazing people are willing to pay more for a single card than you could get a nice 68 set.

ronritt won the Gates Brown card, and he also has the #1 ranked HOF 1968 set. Does anyone know if he's a Tiger collector, or is he simply upgrading his set?

It's like watching a tobacco-spitting contest between those with incredible amount of disposable income. I hope these winning bidders can sleep well at night knowing how much they paid just for spirit of the competition. No other reasons make sense to me.

Ron is a very nice guy , i bought something from him once on the bay and he was a friendly and generous collector

i think i long time ago he came on the boards and said he didnt care wether he made money or not with his set.

he something along the lines...that the money for these cards was disposable income, so he would spend it regardless in casinos, women or just die with a big fat savings account.

i never believed that simply cause you have money and a willingness to spend it, it makes anyone less of a collector.

I agree but only if there is joy in doing so (and in Ron's case, it sounds like he loves collecting). I still have a bias in thinking of the "commoditization" of sports cards to the point where it jusy becomes a number and a certificate ID.

I, of course, do not know Ron and I don't want to sound like I am disparaging him. I apologize (once again) if I had done so.

If he has the cash, and the passion to outbid his competitors, God bless him. For us 68 Tiger bottom feeders, it's a sight to behold!

I just took a look at this thread after not reading for a while , it amazes me that some people still don't understand.

If I win the lottery and have tons of disposable income , I will pay whatever it takes to outbid the next guy if i want it. if I have a passion and the cash I am going to put them together. resale has 0 imact on the decision to bid. of course I will never win the lottery since I don't play and will always be the guy collecting on a budgetimage

It sure seems like a lot of 1968 Topps owners have seen this as an excellent time to sell their Tiger PSA 10 cards...
