To be fair, some people list them for sale on the BST first, then move what doesn't sell to eBay

<< <i>I've noticed a number of posts in the BST forum about what they have put on Ebay. Frankly, if you can't offer them first to the board members here then don't put it on the BST. << <i>The BST is for advertising eBay auctions. >>

Maybe it should be the "BEST" forum (buy, eBay, sell, trade). Or else a separate forum for the eBay stuff.

Truth is, in the future I think I'll post outright offers to sell outside eBay here -- not because of any peer pressure here, but because my recent results on eBay are starting to stink to high heaven. I'll finish the four I have regardless of sale price, but I'm tired of getting low-balled. Even a few months ago I was doing much better.

Seriously, though, I think some of the 'tude so far comes from the original post making it sound like a demand and not just a "what do you all think about this?" kind of discussion. I'm cool with it either way as long as I know what rules HRH et al want to put on it.

I gotta agree with coynclector on this. It is buy, sell, and trade not advertise.image
  • I've posted some coins on the BST and had no interest. I took them to ebay and got more than I was asking for on the BST!

And, I have to agree with Lucy!

    Ken

PS, I think I have to go over there and bump up my ebay auctions also!

Hi everyone, hope you are all having a nice day. I wanted to ask the opinion of some of the members here about Ebay advertising on the BST board. I think, just my opinion of course, that the BST board should be used to sell coins rather than to advertise ebay auctions. If you have a couple of minutes, please provide me with your comments on this. They are appreciated,

Take care and thank you for your time

Coynclecter, as I mentioned in my PM to you - I think this is better suited for the BST forum where your target audience is. But, in addition to that, I feel it should be the poster's choice, and, that while you can certainly ask such things, I don't think you should expect or demand them.

    << <i>sorry, I didn't know I needed a position of authority to express an opinion >>

It sounds as if you are doing more than simply expressing an opinion. I think your chances for cooperation (however good or slim) would have been better, had you used a nicer tone.
  • Much better, but the same answer! Ebay is selling and I'll advertise there at anytime I feel the need to.

I think you could make a good argument for having a separate forum for eBay auctions, but there should be a place for them somewhere. Quite a few regulars on these boards have developed a trust in some of the others on this board, and for people who want to separate the straight-shooters from the scams on eBay, a good first place to start is to have a place where you can see what the sellers you trust are putting on the auction block. That I think is a useful purpose. Whether or not it's in BST or a new separate forum, I don't personally care.

Thank you for starting this thread. I hadn't thought of promoting my Ebay auctions by posting them over there. It'll certainly generate more bids that way.

Of course the ones who most get offended are the Ebayers. Personally I do not care my self, but it does make this message board lose a little credibility. If I were a dishonest seller I could hit the board a couple of times and take advantage of some of you guys who collect high dollar coins. It could happen. -Dan

Not really, because most of the people are looking for the stuff posted by the people on this forum they believe they can trust. A scammer isn't going to blend in and gain respect for months before scamming -- they'll just quick hit someone, somewhere. I think the forum newbie with 2 posts and joined this month would be looked at just as an eBay seller with no feedback and an ID minted two days ago.

  • I'd use an eBay forum if there was one. I prefer to bid on auctions listed by fellow CU forum members. For now as long as I see eBay in the title of the thread I'm OK with things and I always put eBay in my title when I promote my auctions.

I really DON'T CARE....I was just trying to make a point. NOthing upsets me on these forums....I take it or leave it.

Whoa that's kind of bossy & harsh!

Let me c&p that here so I can read & think about all that & what made you mad as I reply.

I do get the gist of what your saying and somewhat agree because so many sleazeBay sellers are actually retail sellers cluttering up the board but it's allowed by CU so why not take advantage of the chance to expose an eBay auction to the highly specialized collectors who read the BST board?
That's why I post my links there, so you all can have first shot at my auctions on the rare occasion when I sell some coins from my collection. (I'm not a dealer)

I used to advertise my extras on the BST board before I started using eBay but it's just a big hassle to sell on the board.

If I offer a brilliant white well struck heavily bagmarked MS62 Morgan for $75w/free shipping do they simply send me a PM & say "hey Dog I want it and will send you a check next week"?
L no. I get 500 bs PMs telling me:
<<<It's in the greysheet for $65 and will I take $65 for it.>>>
    <<<Ok, how about $70?>>>
<<<It's in the CU Price Guide for $33>>>
    <<<Is it toned>>>
<<<does it have any bad marks? I only buy PQ coins>>>
<<<How much will I really take for it.>>>
<<<I'll paypal you right now so you need to mail it first thing in the morning cause I don't like waiting>>>
    <<<How much will I sell it for.>>>
<<<I saw one on TeleTrade for $55>>>
<<<if you sell it to me for bid I'll buy it>>>
NO NO NO that's why I advertised it for $75 I WANT $75!!
<<<It's really dinged up, not worth $75.>>>
Dinged up? No shiat sherlock that's why I'm calling it a bagmarked ms62.

Or I sell a $7 circ FINE 1922 Peace dollar.
    <<<if I don't like it can I return it?>>>
    <<<Can I have a picture of the obv & rev>>>
    <<<It bids @ $6 & I never pay over bid for my coins.>>>
<<<I want it but don't get paid till next month, will you hold it for me?>>>
    <<<Will you take $80 for the $75 Morg & the $7 Peace dollar?>>>
<<<I want it I'll get back with you in a couple of days when I get back from out of town & send you a PayPal>>>
<<<Will you trade me for 3 buffalos, 2 wheaties and an indian penny?>>>
<<<If you haven't sold it by day after tomorrow I want it but if somebody else buys it that's ok>>>

So that's why I now list my stuff on eBay starting @ 1¢ with free shipping and let er rip. You can set your own price & won't feel like I screwed you and I won't feel like you screwed me.
Lots of coin collectors don't look @ eBay and wouldn't know about my stuff unless I posted it on the BST board.
I am nice about it though, my sell thread title says it's on eBay, it's not like I trick you and make you open my thread just to find out it's an eBay auction & piss you off.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I rarely sell. Period. I have no issues with ebay items in the BST board as long as they are polite and mention ebay in the thread title. This issue has been discussed more times than the poe thread. CU doesn't have a problem with ebay items in BST and the majority of the board doesn't, either. I think that settles everything.

I gotta agree with coynclector on this. It is buy, sell, and trade not advertise.

Sorry, but ebay is a selling tool. Hence the Buy, Sell, Trade Forum.

I used to post first, then put them on ebay. I rarely ever got any offers, so now they go straight to ebay. Anyone here can make offers on anything I have listed on ebay.

  • I have sold a lot of stuff on bst to board members, and rarely sell on ebay. I think the intent of the bst board was to allow members to sell to members, as opposed to advertising ebay auctions.

Personally, I would rather find an item I seek, work directly with the seller rather than make my way through ebay, sitting up watching auctions, etc, etc in an effort to buy something for $10 or $20 less. It's just not worth the hassle. And wading through all of the ebay stuff on bst is a hassle.
