Congratulations Gerry

Gerry (the Thomas Irwin collection) has completed the entire Lincoln cent P mint collection from 1909 - 2004 in ms 67 red with several ms 68 red specimens. He recently bought the 1914 in ms 67 red from the recent Heritage
Long Beach auction .
Perhaps prices will now come down?

  • Pretty impressive! Congrats!

So, guess which three of those dates are only pop 1/0. You'd be surprised. I wonder which of any P date will in the long term hold its status as the toughest.

There are some pretty tough memorials. Maybe the '64 or one from the late '70's like the '79.

Some of the early zinc might be pretty tough or the '82 copper.

It's been a long time since I collected them but Some of the later wheaties weren't easy nice.

You nailed one of them correct, 1964 is 1/0. As for '79 that's the easiest, pop near or over 100 now in ms67 with several ms68's! Good guess anyway (77 and 78 are so much harder from what I've seen looking for these, but they still have fairly large pops too)
  • Here's a question for Gerry... I assume he must have both 60 sd and ld in ms67, but what about the 1982 varieties? Does he have an ms67 copper small date? I have a raw ms67ish copper large date and a pcgs ms67 copper 82-d, but I can't find a nice copper small date. I've looked through about 10 rolls and got nothing nice.

Astounding achievement, and utterly anticipated. Sincere congratulations, Gerry!

  • Gerry deserves this recognition from his fellow numismatists. In addition, from my correspondence with him it is obvious he's a great guy, as well.

Way to go, Gerry. I am sure that we all look forward to seeing your set someday.

  • Thank you Stewart and everyone else, but the report is a wee bit premature. We shall see if the grading gods give me a break on my next submission. Meanwhile, thanks to Stewart for putting one of his 1914’s in 67 up for auction. I did not intend to bid on it, but a dealer won it and flipped it to me. So I'm closer. And, I’m especially happy because now Stewart can afford to pick up the tab the next time we have lunch.

I’m fortunate I picked up all of the latter date p-mint wheats a few years ago when no one else wanted them. Basically, I was just lucky; there was no great foresight involved.

Some of the memorials are really tough, especially the varieties. Patience is a virtue. The 1982’s in copper are much more difficult than the zinc versions. And what about the Wide AM varieties? Getting those in 67 or better seems almost impossible now that most of them have been gobbled up. I’m glad I got my 1999 from a fellow collector (initials DP) over one year ago.

Now back to the D and S mints.

  • MANOFCOINS,

I'll assume that was a serious question. There has been some speculation about where Gerry's set would wind up with many believing it would be #1 if registered. Yes, #1.

    Gerry,

Premature or not, "congratulations." I know it is a great set and hope someday to see some of it.

Great achievement, even greater guy. That counts for bonus Registry bonus points in my book. He and Stewart are the odd couple of Lincoln collectors who have more in common than first meets the eye.

Gerry- Thanks and congrats for a fabulous collection. Someday everyone will know the magnitude of your collection. No doubt the finest Lincoln collection ever assembled. Chris

Gerry, nice job and it could not have happened to a nicer guy! I just want to know if this is a "premature congratulation" i mean....
  • That's over 100 NICE pennies!!! Impressive. Not an easy task at all. Stewart, I would keep an eye on price moves... The P's may not sell so high anymore, now that Gerry is "resting". But Stewart, bet you are going to sell some or your D and S "doubles", if Gerry is looking for any!!!! I'm sure you know which ones he needs!!!
