How doable would a nice collection of bust halfs be five years from now?

Quite an interesting series. So many different types. But they are too expensive now to even consider, although I would like a nice one for my type album.image

What grade are you going to consider?

5 years from now is difficult to project, if you read the posts on this forum, you'll see some people stating that the market is up, up, UP while others are preaching about the impending doom of the coin market.

    So it depends.

Not much help, I am sorry about that. But it's too far into the future to even try to predict.

It's a great set of coins, once you get into it, you will have so many reasons to expand. I started with a couple type coins for my 7070 set. Then wanted a couple additional coins just because. Then I wanted a date set. Then a major die marriage set. I'll probably just keep finding reasons to buy and hoard them.

Quite doable. A nice XF capped year set can easily be done for an average of about $250.00 a coin. A Red Book set (with the exception of the 1817/14--only 7 known) can be completed for about $300.00-$350.00 a coin. Capped bust halves are some of the best bang for your buck coins in U.S. collecting.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • I as thinking VG-8 to F-12, five years from now i'll actually have a nice steady job to pay for coins.

  • It all depends on who is holding them and how they were acquired. It's been really easy to get credit these past few years with interest rates so low. Now that rates are starting to inch up again, credit lines are going to tighten, and those that bought coins on time, are going to feel a crunch and start dumping their holdings to pay down those credit lines. I don't think prices are going to be this high in 5 years.

Bust halves are common and it will always be easy to complete a year set, just 1815 will be expensive. A comprehensive die marriage collection will always be difficult.

edit - this is just for capped bust halves, the preturbs 1794-1807 will always be difficult and challenging.

  • If you are looking for a challenge, try assembling a date set of the capped bust halfs in original condition in any circulated grade. Probably not as difficult to do as the Barber halfs which have quite a few very scarce dates, but a major challenge nonetheless. Start now if you can and in five years you may be half way there. I doubt that prices for Fine and below grades will have appreciated very much in five years which is a good thing for collectors.

Challenges such as this are very enjoyable and do tend to keep ones spending down.
  • Yes that's what im thinking, im a fan of bust coinage. I think it looks really attractive.image I can only afford the bust capped bust half dimes now though.image
