If your new with collecting coins, or even seasoned with it, a good book to read is: Eyewitness Books -- Money. The subtitle says: Discover the story of money in close-up--its history, its meaning, and its many forms around the world. In this book it explains many gold coins, gold bars, interesting facts, counterfeit methods, and all types of stuff. Although it's most definitely meant for the beginner in coin collecting; or even someone who knows nothing about coin collecting and is just generally interested in the history of money, this book is great and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Although the book was made in around 1991, a few of the things in the book are not up to date. Like what the most expensive coin sold for, and who the richest man in the world is (In the book it said Sultan of Brunei is the richest man in the world; at an estimated $25 billion. Now, I believe it's Bill Gates, with triple that amount?)
If you don't want to buy it, you can always go to your local liberty and rent it. Eyewitness makes all types of books; not only about money. I also have one with Mummies.
